Definitely not an objective review. When your introductory statement is "New York is the mecca of rap" and you follow up by mentioning "the fall of Curtis Jackson" I already know where the article is going. You compared him to Nas and other NY rappers throughout the article. Just judge it for what it is. That being said, the score you gave wasn't far off from mine. I personally gave it a 3/5
I purposely compared him to NY rappers because that's what Dave East does, as do many of his fans who claim he's bringing back that old feeling. So if that's the measuring stick he wants, why not apply and see how he stacks up. He's also aiming to be the premier new NY rapper, so why not compare him to the previous ones. I wouldn't expect him to be Nas or Hov...my problem is he doesn't do anything above average like they did (storytelling, wordplay, etc).
Great new rappers have to create their own image, personality, etc. I feel like NY is stuck in a similar place to where the west coast was in the early 00s. If you remember, that early "new west" movement was built on rappers aping The Game and rapping over Chronic 2001-type beats. The entire west coast was basically dead on the mainstream level and then they started experimenting and we saw new/exciting shyt like Blu, Pac Div, etc. Suddenly all types of movements were birthed from the beat tape shyt (Flying Lotus) to Dom Kennedy, YG, TDE, etc. All of whom had their own sound and weren't relying on Dre cosigns or beats. New York needs something like that. For a bit it seemed like it was happening...if you remember when Maffew Ragazino, Meyhem Lauren, Action Bronson, etc were emerging after Roc Marci dropped Marcberg...but that movement has stalled.
