I revisited this tape, in particular "scottie pippens" about a month ago
Forgot how absolutely disgusting this song is from front to back. :banderas:

That beat, when the bass line drops is so.demonic:sitdown: :demonic::damn:

Currensy got renegaded by Gibbs obviously but he had a very underrated verse. Spittas detached cold flow works really well on this beat :ehh:

And Gibbs comes through with the Grand Slam "leave faces with alterations , the close casket console ":win:

Curren$y doesn’t get nearly enough credit as an emceee.

Dude constantly makes easy listening riding music. He makes the type of stuff I wouldn’t feel to guilty about listening to in front of my 60 year old plus mom. He does kinda recycle a lot of his subject matter, but the production, hooks, arrangements, and features are always top notch in my opinion.

Other guys like Larry June, Le$, and others have kinda taken his blueprint and run with it. I did not see his career trajectory unfolding like it has when he was just another guy doing mostly features on No Limit.

shyt sounds like every other Spitta tape tbh :skip:

I don’t get the hype
It’s more like the rest sound like this. You gotta realize this is over 10 years old. Currensy was barely known and had only really done Pilot Talk 1 and 2.

This was fresh and unheard of back then. At this point too, Alchemist was still doing 80% New York beats for Mobb, Lox, Wu, and G-Unit, with some west coast Snoop and Dilated in the mix.

No one expected a collab like this, and Alchemist beats never sounded psychedelic back then. This was really new territory for both guys to collab, and Al was just getting into weirder drugs and inspired by hanging with Madlib and Oh No, but he hadn’t gone off the deep end either.

This was also a LOT of people’s introduction to Freddie Gibbs.

I’d never expect anyone to really catch Covert Coup in 2021. It was a product of the blog era of hip-hop. 2 random ass cats collaborating that wouldn’t be seen as weird now days. Covert Coup was a stoner version of Madvillainy.

ah ok I first started listening to Currensy around 2008 but I haven’t regularly checked him out since 17. He has a ton of stuff I need to catch up on
