The 1960s was also the decade where majority of the black vote shifted towards the Democrats because of JFK. However, the party was conflicted because many white democrats hated blacks. That was also the period many white racists switched parties.

Even then large numbers of blacks voted for nixon (republican) when LBJ left office. They felt that nixons economic plans could help black folks.
