I got a 403b thru American Funds(they switched from Fidelity before I signed up) with my 2nd job and opened up account with Franklin Templeton early in the year.
I was bullshytting thru the years before deciding to get serious with my money.

I just invested 480.00 into Fidelity. I have my 401k with them as well. Recurring deductions of 100.00 monthly. Mutual funds are a minimum 2500.00 buy in, but they have stocks, ETF, bonds, etc. for a first time investor into a ROTH account. When you guys started off, what did you start buying into if you don't mind my asking. I want to invest for LONG TERM, but I'm willing to take a risk as well.

I started with Vanguards 2050 fund. I had an IRA from an old job and I opened up a Roth a few years later. The site @BaldingSoHard recommended doesn't have any minimum amounts to open an account.

I bought into one of those target 2045 funds, a Nasdaq index fund, and a precious metals fund (:sadcam:). Even though the other two have done well,I lost so much money on precious metals that my IRA has barely broken even. Just gotta ride it out.

Yea I haven't selected any investments as of yet. I'll study what looks good. Why in the hell are mutual funds so expensive to buy into???? What type of fee does betterment have? And also, what other types of accounts are there besides IRA accounts?

25 and i have a roth, 401k and company stock. I got about 10% of my pay going to all three. Signed up for the roth as soon as i got hired and 2 years later it came in handy. Borrowed half of what i had as a downpayment for my crib.

To anyone reading this thread right now, if you are in your 20's and don't have an IRA, go to Vanguard right now and sign up. It will take 10 mins and it'll be one of the best decisions you've ever made. Even if you're in your 30's, it's still a good idea, but if you're in your 20's it's a MUST.
I'm about to do this.

Can you give me more details breh?

Do I need to have cash on hand or what?

What type? IRA Roth?

I have a 401K and a pension plan. That's it though.

With vanguard, the minimum to open an account was 5k. I'm with arierl now and I just opoenes up an account for a stack. Betterment has no min open so you can open one with a few hundred. Just make sure its a no load mutual fund and you straight.

You do everything online, so as long as you got the money in your account it's good that's all you really need. Vanguard has the 5k limit, but other companies don't (I don't think Ariel Investment or betterment requires a minimum to open an account).
