I think in this case its not so much of a calibration to a standard, but reducing the cycle counts would decrease the amount of amplificiation. Reducing the cycle count say from 38 to 35 or something would result in a 3-fold decrease. Perhaps at that 38th cycle you are amplifying something that isn't really there, declaring it a positive test because its there when in reality it was but it wasn't in the order of magnitude to be a threat to a person
