I find it funny this was never even a serious consideration. Not even the most "TAKE THE VIRUS SERIOUSLY" pro lockdown, doomer types really floated the idea. As long as there is unrestricted air travel you'll always have the potential to move local outbreaks across the country in a matter of hours. Demand for air travel has been trending upwards lately as well.

Sad, as I was hoping for the total collapse of the industry. :ahh:

:ufdup:Speak for yourself.

Some people noted that requirement as soon as it was announced.

I think splitting the US up into virtual countries each with their own curve might have merit but for a start there will need to be travel restrictions and controls.

And while some see science based reasoning as "doom and gloom" we can see from this that it is sometimes not that.

Okay, so YOU said it. Kudos. Seriously, that was forward thinking.

Well, let me put it this way; it was not an idea that had much mainstream discussion beyond travel bans from certain nations. I don’t remember an interstate air travel ban being discussed at all.

One of the New England states wanted to ban fleeing New Yorkers from entering their territory and Cuomo immediately shouted them down for it. They backed off the proposal almost immediately. I don’t remember what state though.

Fair enough but that is effectively what was done with the EU Schengen Zone .. Even within some countries like Romania and Germany.

Also this breh asked the same question.

I don’t understand how this works in practice.

If you’re Phase 3, do you restrict travel to Phase 1 states?

But I agree there were not many.

One of the reasons why I think the discussion might have been a bit "off limits" was the early lobbying and PR push by the airlines basically DEMANDING money or they would go belly up. They threw down the gauntlet before any form of bailout was a serious consideration.

Suggesting a mitigation effort that would have an outsized effect on an industry that was basically declaring itself dead without assistance was going to be difficult. Once the crisis raged on and people dug into their positions the thought of restricting interstate air travel had to be politically revolting even from those who put politics last.

BUT that's an effective form of social distancing. Reduces the need for essential workers (airlines and it's associated infrastructures are no longer operating), you're not in an aluminum tube with other potentially ill, and most states infections will be confined to those areas. Of course that's more stimulus outlay for the unemployed and furloughed, plus whatever the airlines would demand additionally for a complete shutdown. Then those who would feel the restriction of travel between states is TOO MUCH (though technically it was already restricted within their own counties but perception and all that) and complain about it......

So yeah, I suppose it wasn't economically or politically feasible. I get it, the science-based solutions are the winners, all biases aside, but I've always felt getting them implemented would be impossible so I never enter them into arguments. Probably not the best stance.

Should have been done from the jump. Too late now.

Facts. International travel should've been extremely limited too.

Anyways...Gov. Cuomo threatening to shut shyt back down if these bars/restaurants in Manhattan get their shyt together.

N.Y. Gov. Cuomo Could 'Reverse' Reopening In Regions Breaking Social Distancing Rules, Restaurants And Bars Could Lose Liquor Licenses

ALBANY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo sent a stern warning to restaurant and bar owners Sunday after reports came in from across the state of large gatherings where people were ignoring social distancing and not wearing masks.

“We have gotten 25,000 complaints, to the state, of businesses that are in violation of the reopening plan,” said Cuomo. “We have never received more complaints in a shorter period of time.”

He added the complaints have come mostly from Manhattan and The Hamptons.

Cuomo said he would “reverse” course in regions where the state’s reopening plan is not being followed.

The governor said inspectors from the state Liquor Authority are out, along with a task force of state investigators.

“We are not kidding around with this. You’re talking about jeopardizing peoples’ lives,” said Cuomo, reiterating restaurants’ and bars’ liquor licenses are on the line.

Videos and photos posted on social media show crowds gathered outside bars and restaurants on the Upper East Side and in the East Village on Friday night.

“If you are an individual, you cannot violate the open container law,” said Cuomo. “You can’t stand on the sidewalk, drinking a beer.”

The governor also reminded police and protesters that they are required to wear masks.

Cuomo said local governments are responsible for ensuring the state’s reopening plan is followed.

“I understand it’s not popular. Nobody wants to go to a sidewalk with people drinking and say, ‘You people can’t drink on the sidewalk,'” said Cuomo. “You know what’s more unpopular? If that region closes because that local government did not do their job.”

To add, I feel alot of social distancing methods have to be all or nothing for them to work effectively. I think we can see that bear out in countries where it has worked. In certain countries it was Authoritarianism, others previous epidemic experience to draw from, others the benefit of smaller populations and earlier outlay. In America, we would need a massive and long term socialism styled stimulus to prop up the Capitalist economy until we got things under control. This mix of social distancing and Capitalism was never going to work in my opinion. It's either all or nothing. If you try the "some and not other" approach you just get the same results as nothing, but farther down the line.

Thus, lockdown without money is not effective. You may as well leave it open because eventually you will have to reopen anyway and hope for the best or people will do what they want anyway. Public health costs money and historically we have never invested much into it. For what many say is a historical health threat we are handling it in the most mundane American manner possible.

Whatever one believes about the danger of the virus aside, the most effective way to emerge on the other side is the public health solution. It just needs to be funded properly for everyone to be on board. People will forgo their haircut if they are getting boosted UI and 2k checks every couple of months.

If New York does not see the same inevitable spikes (which I feel are reasonable) that other reopened states are seeing then I believe they have achieved that hallowed "herd immunity" (I don't think that's what it actually is scientifically speaking) some countries have been after and people have been advocating for. Of course, if this is so, do you want to take the New York route to get there? Even if you adjust proportionally, just going by the shocked reactions within some of these reopened states about spikes that should have been anticipated, I don’t think many of these places would be willing to achieve "herd immunity" in that manner.

Not actual Herd Immunity, jackass, but what politicians consider Herd Immunity; enough people have had the virus and social and economic activity can resume without worrying and uncomfortable spikes, instead days of low or zero deaths and a negligible rise in new cases......what NYC is currently experiencing. For something resembling actual Herd Immunity in America, according to a recent study, we would need 70-75% of America to have been infected and we are currently at 5%.

This Vox article puts it between 50 and 65%.

For the pandemic to simmer down naturally — in a way that will allow life to go back to normal — the population needs to achieve something called herd immunity. For the coronavirus, herd immunity could possibly be achieved when 50 percent of the population is immune. But it could be as high as 65 percent.

But no area is anywhere near that figure, even New York City, where at least 17,000 people have died of Covid-19. In late April, it was estimated that 20 percent of the city had been exposed to the coronavirus.

New York was at 20% in late April. I guess that's the point one could expect a small breather. That's still 30% below the most optimistic estimate of actual Herd Immunity and we saw what NYC had to experience to even get a bit of a breather.

Countries with universal health care can open up and have everyone wear masks and carry hand sanitizer and pretty much open all the way back up.

Countries without essentially create a soft genocide, especially if they're not providing economic relief. What's happening is completely insane and specific to America.
