A Detroit police captain has died from the coronavirus.

Capt. Jonathan Parnell, who went by the nickname “Recon,” headed major crimes based out of headquarters. In the past, he working in homicide, sex crimes, child abuse and narcotics.

“He was a great guy, very tactical, very smart, he was a street cop, a real street cop, very polite, very humble,” said someone who had worked with Parnell.

Parnell was in his fifties and leaves behind three sons.

Dan Donakowski, spokesman for the Detroit Police Department, confirmed early Wednesday morning that a ranking officer had passed as result of COVID-19, but declined to reveal the name.

Parnell is the department's second coronavirus death. A 38-year-old civilian 9-1-1 dispatcher died Monday.

More than 200 officers have been ordered to self-quarantine as the result of a coronavirus outbreak within the department.

As of late Tuesday, Detroit had 11 deaths and 574 confirmed coronavirus cases.

Now this Pandemic is gonna devastate humanity. Countless families emotionally scarred for life with pointless deaths like this.

With no underlying health issues, the Fort Lee dad was in good shape before he was hospitalized
March 2 with the virus at Hackensack University Medical Center.

But during his 19-day stint, the dangerous bug ravaged his lungs and he was placed on oxygen.

Cai said was released to his home with a smaller oxygen machine — “like a purse I carry all the time”
— and another, larger one for when he sleeps.

“I am only 32 and I cannot rely on oxygen forever,” he said.

Cai said that there’s a chance that lung fibrosis could cause problems for him in the future. His doctors are unable to tell him whether his damaged lungs will ever recover.

The potentially deadly bug was previously understood to live two to three days on some
surfaces — but the new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
said it lasts more than five times as long.

Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology found that 90 percent of COVID-19
transmissions that occurred until Sunday happened in regions with low temperatures — between
37.4 and 62.6 degrees Fahrenheit.

Coronavirus cases have been reported in countries with equatorial climates and those in the
Southern Hemisphere —which are now in summer.

But regions with average temperatures above 64.4 degrees Fahrenheit currently account for
fewer than 6 percent of global cases.
