@Brendan Frazier for sure you are right that not everybody is dying, but even catching this at all is a really terrible thing to have happen to you. If it were simply the regular full-blown flu it would be a pretty terrible thing to happen, and given that this is 3 to 6 times as infectious as the flu, just imagine how bad it would be for the world to have so many people with the regular flu at one time. If 50 to 60% of the worlds population just caught the regular flu this year that would already be a nightmare for the global economy and public health in general.
But this is worse than the regular flu, as we have no herd immunity or antibodies to fight it.
About 20% of the people that catch this thing needs serious care in the hospital, which alone is a fairly traumatic experience. Or even if you don’t get it, but a a family member or close friend does. Imagine the psychological stress of not knowing if they’ll survive or not.
I don’t think the media is blowing this up too much, and in fact I think they could arguably be doing a little bit more. This is a very serious situation and it’s not something anybody should just brush off.
If the worst thing that happens when you catch this is that you’re the sickest you’ve ever been in your entire life for several weeks if not a month and change, that’s still a very terrible thing to have happened to you
We also don’t know if this causes any permanent lung damage. It’s possible that it does, and it’s also possible that you can get reinfected with the virus where it’s worse the second time around. We just don’t know enough yet
