Nah.

When people heard he was doing a collab with Lauren Hill, everyone was hype.

The song was totally different than what people were expecting. And she didn’t even rap.

Overall the album was dope. If I ruled the world opened doors for Nas career so you can’t even knock it.

I never said anything negative about "If I Ruled The World". I was only pointing out that The Fugees were vocal against the whole mafisos thing as Lauryn had a line on "Ready or Not" that went "So while you imitating Al Capone, I'll be Nina Simone and defecating on your microphone". Of course she wasn't dissing Nas as "If I Ruled The World" wasn't even made yet as the song was partly inspired by Lauryn's ad lib from "Ready or Not".

NY all day..Da Stead & BK..
this narrative is so stupid. a lot of albums/movies/books/paintings weren't appreciated until much later. not every album has to be "an instant classic".
The “hate” for the album didnt match how the streets felt. It wasn’t fair criticism. That’s the point. The criticism was that it wasn’t something else. Not for what it was.

Sony/Columbia is a big label but it wasn't rap royalty. How much of the struggles and narratives over mid-to-late-90s Nas are a direct result of him not being on Def Jam or even Bad Boy? Not being in that big club where the label is handing out more payola than anyone else, not pushing your records as effectively as it could be pushed, etc. Because you never hear the "real hip hop" dudes shytting on Vol 1 or other Jay records. You don't even hear the disdain for some of those Meth records. Sure as hell don't hear it about DMX.

Sounds plausible to me. Cats need to follow the money more.

Mega always praised It Was Written and Illmatic. One of the docs...perhaps Who Am I he was showing he had It Was Written in the car.

But it typical QB fashion, he still took shots at Nas style during that era.

It was written has always been better then illmatic. nikkas just fronted.

Live nikka rap has to be the illest mobb Nas Calob in my opinion. shyt was ill. I think I’m going to workout tomorrow to that shyt.
He was held to a standard so many other rappers weren’t. Rapper’s rapper/Peoples Champ

He was crucified for makin radio friendly joints while other’s weren’t held to that standard.

And was for years and even still today for some

The initial response was that it wasn't Illmatic, but the streets ended up loving it. The Lauryn collabo was different than expected, but underground heads and casuals fukked with it.

The only real debate was if the underground were losing Nas to mainstream, because of TM....but in the end, everyone was loving it..and proved wrong. Shootouts, The Message & Black Girl Lost were underground heads favorites...dudes with the cassette stunted on those with the CD...and hardly no one was feeling Nas Is Coming

The IWW hate was always some ex producer and corporate generated hatred. Nas chose his own path with the Trackmasters and Stoute. It was magic but the ole school nikkas felt like Nas was secondary to their production. Best decision was to move away from that early90’s sound. From that point you started to hear the lack of beat picking ear rhetoric. I lived it, the streets loved that album!
