how? breh was just a mayor when Obama was a senator and decided to run. Obama was on the radar since his speech in 04, Booker wasn't even Mayor then. It wasn't until his second term as mayor that he started having a national profile and that was under Obama's administration. The only thing CB should be mad about is that his profile peaked while Obama was in office. Otherwise the only person Obama leapfrogged was Clinton.Booker was defending the corporate interests that back him if I recall correctly.....and setting up the groundwork for this 2020 run.
He threw several shots at Obama over the years.
If you really think about it, Obama leapfrogged CB and Harold Ford( and Jesse Jackson Jr.). They were the ones being groomed for possible pres./ vp runs. I always felt that Booker halfway felt that Obama stole his thunder.
the sky is falling

You know perception is important in politics, regardless of whether it should be or not. And that looked bad. He could have handled that better.
As if that would make Tariq and the rest of the ADOS movement demagogues happy. Nothing he or anybody says will make those folks happy.
Those same things were happening for Obama. Obama didn't leap him, CB was not in a position to run in 08, Obama barely was. I've been following CB as he's an alum of my school. He was making waves, but not on a national radar until he was mayor, mayor to Pres wasn't gonna happen, just like Obama didn't go community organizer to President.Harold Ford delivered the keynote speech at 2000 DNC. .
Booker staged a few political stunts when he was on the Newark city council . He moved into a rundown building to focus the spotlight on the conditions that housing apt. allowed to exist.( If that sounds familiar, it's what the mayor of Chicago did when she moved briefly into Cabrini Green)
Anyway, media ate up the stunt..and this part of the country is one of the media capitols...so his story was picked up by media gatekeepers early. When I read what his professional/academic credentials were , I knew he was laying groundwork for the eventual presidential run.
I also knew that he had connections to the media gatekeepers
and if I'm not mistaken his story appeared on Oprah during that time and she co-signed his efforts. Oprah mention is what really put him in the national spotlight.....and he started getting covered in national print magazines.
NY times profile about him from 2004
IN PERSON; In Newark, Cory Booker Reloads
The documentary, Street Fight which came out in 2005 and was nominated for an Oscar, is what pushed Booker further into the national spotlight
That's a separate argument. We can agree that very little of what Booker says will make the ADOS happy. However, that doesn't change the fact that that exchange looked bad and could have been handled better.
i didn't watch, but it's pretty unrealistic for folks to think presidential candidates are going to have a solely african american platform to put forth. no law or amendment put forth in the history of this country has explicitly been for blacks, we may have been the group in mind, but it was always applicable to any group. That's a separate argument. I'd disagree. I followed Obama also. I remember the unique set of circumstances that lead to him running against perennial loser Alan Keyes for Senate.(Those same things were happening for Obama. What percentage of the democratic caucus is African American?i didn't watch, but it's pretty unrealistic for folks to think presidential candidates are going to have a solely african american platform to put forth. no law or amendment put forth in the history of this country has explicitly been for blacks, we may have been the group in mind, but it was always applicable to any group.
Yes, it is a quick jump. but he didn't jump Booker, Booker was not in line ahead of Obama. It's that simple...All these people except the billionaire business people who come out of nowhere, have been playing the game building up to their run. It's only considered leap frogging someone if someone were pretty much tapped/in line to be next. Hilary Clinton was supposed to be next in 08, but Obama came out of nowhere and took the nom. CB was not in the conversation for president in 08, not by his own actions nor by action/decision of the DNC.I'd disagree. I followed Obama also. I remember the unique set of circumstances that lead to him running against perennial loser Alan Keyes for Senate.(
He went from state senator to PRESIDENT of the United States in four years. Wouldn't you agree that this is a uniquely fast tracked jump?
People are groomed and pay political dues for years so I'd say that this jump by Obama constitutes an epic leapfrogging of everybody else who was on such a political track .
I also find it interesting that people think that there is a cheat code for politics.i didn't watch, but it's pretty unrealistic for folks to think presidential candidates are going to have a solely african american platform to put forth. no law or amendment put forth in the history of this country has explicitly been for blacks, we may have been the group in mind, but it was always applicable to any group.
