They didn't have a choice with Monk. Without cap space, they could only offer a minimal raise and he signed for the minimum. They have space this coming summer so no excuse not to bring Lonnie back if he continues to play like this.
I've said it for awhile now but this was always the front office being stupid with their plan. They've been hellbent on not having any contracts besides AD and Bron this next off-season for years now, and you set yourself up for that very thing with Monk and now TBJ

What do you not understand about the salary cap? Bron, AD and Westbrook take up the entire cap by themselves. There's no way to work around that without one of them being gone.

If they trade Westbrook and take back salary that goes into next season, it will restrict them again. LeBron and AD alone make $87 million next year.

Spending the cap space money on Walker makes no sense....The Lakers should first sign FA's (shooters, post depth), then sign Walker to an extension.

They can do that if his offers are near where his current deal is. If someone comes around and offers $15 million, LA will not be able to come close to that since they don't have his Bird rights.

Jerami Grant
D'Angelo Russell
Myles Turner
Harrison Barnes
Caris LaVert
Malik Beasley
Christian Wood

These are the most likely FA targets with the amount of cap space they'll have and some may end up being out of their price range. Not exactly a murderous row and all of those guys would eat up just about all of their cap space.
