STAMFORD — A former city man who was due in court Wednesday in a $1 million DoorDash scheme was killed this week in a New York shooting, officials say.

David Smith, 22, was found shot Monday morning in New Rochelle, N.Y., police said. The Mount Vernon resident suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and was taken to the hospital where he later died, police said.

Smith had been slated to appear Wednesday at state Superior Court in Stamford for a hearing where he was supposed to accept or reject a plea deal.

In November, Smith rejected an offer from state prosecutors to serve five years in prison in connection with the case.

Frank Riccio, the attorney who represented Smith in the case, said he was shocked to hear about his client’s death.

“He was a quiet, kind young man who I had the pleasure of knowing,” Riccio said. “I feel terrible for his family.”
In light of Smith’s death, the Stamford larceny case will not proceed, according to Assistant State’s Attorney Margaret Moscati, who was handling the case.
Moscati said the case will eventually be dismissed.
In November, Smith, who was also facing charges related to a January 2023 domestic violence incident, rejected a deal to plead guilty to first-degree larceny, third-degree identity theft, first-degree computer crime, third-degree assault, first-degree threatening, second-degree strangulation and illegal possession of a high-capacity magazine.

He would have faced five years in prison and four years of probation under the offer, with up to an additional five years if he violated probation.
New Rochelle police officers were called to the Heritage Homes Complex for a reported fatal shooting around 10:50 a.m. Monday. Police believe Smith knew the shooter and the incident stemmed from a “personal dispute,” New Rochelle police said in a news release on Tuesday.
Officers found multiple handguns in connection with the shooting and charged three people in the incident.
Marquis Williamson, 21, of Newark, N.J., and Amiri Oneal, 21, of Mount Vernon, N.Y., were each charged with second-degree murder. Anthony Webster, 20, of Mount Vernon, N.Y., was also charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

There were no traces of the shooting left Wednesday at the crime scene at the apartment complex in New Rochelle, N.Y., where the shooting occurred. Neighbors said the area where Smith was shot repeatedly had been cleaned up, and the crime scene tape had been taken down.
“It’s a bad situation,” said Andre Mann, a resident of the Heritage Homes development.
Cindy James, another resident, said she did not hear gunshots, but the aftermath of the shooting was chaotic. “A lot of running, a lot of commotion,” she said.
Nairobi Hidalgo said the shooting was a stunning crime in the area.

“It’s pretty safe here, this was a big surprise” she said.
There was no one home Wednesday afternoon at the Mount Vernon residence associated with Smith.
A neighbor, David Harris, said he occasionally saw Smith in the hallway, but didn’t know him.
“Unbelievable, very sad,” he said.
