I'm confused, what would the customer paying on a stolen card have to do with the driver, and why would the driver's account be frozen? Am I trippin, or is this not a valid question?

Greed got him. He could have stopped at $500k. Heck, he could have stopped at $100k. $100k lump sum liquid money would have put him in a position to make some moves if he was smart.
It wasn't the scamming that got him caught up though. If he hadn't put hands on his chick we'd have never heard about this. Article says he was getting coached but he had way too much money on hand to not be the mastermind. If he was really just a worker he would've been making regular drop offs and the cops wouldn't have found so much.

That is not always the case. Plenty of people scammed out of money with no means of recovering.

Also, you are fine with evil as long as eventually people receive what was taken (Make no mistakes about it, scamming is evil). Taking into account that normally takes time to accomplish, so while they wait on the problem being fixed their financial life falls apart.
