Alonge Hawes’s ‘Black On Both Sides’ Nominated For Three Awards At Upcoming Minnesota Webfest
Date: September 16, 2019Author: Michaela P. Shelton0

While the general populace has yet to lay eyes on the new series from creator Alonge Hawes, the committee in charge of this year’s upcoming Minnesota Webfest have apparently seen enough to award three nominations to the multi-hyphenate’s upcoming series ‘Black On Both Sides’.

The series, which has no official release date as of press time, was nominated for Best Pilot, Best Representation Of Communities Of Color, and the Alumni Award; marking the third straight year an Alonge Hawes created series has been nominated at the event. Hawes first was awarded a trophy for Best Representation Of Communities Of Color in 2017 for the first season of his critically acclaimed digital series Blue Collar Hustle. Hawes returned to the festival in 2018 with the second season of Blue Collar Hustle being honored the Best Returning Series award. In 2019, not only is Black On Both Sides an awards contender, the series pilot episode will have its world premiere at the festival; after which Hawes will speak on Black storytelling in modern day media.

The Minnesota Webfest, now in its third year, is billed as the first film festival dedicated to the web series format in the upper Midwest. The festival will take place Sep 26th-29th at the Hennepin Theater Trust in Minneapolis.

Black On Both Sides has been described as a story of “Young African American millennials who are attempting to exist in a setting where blackness must come secondary to business”. The series will explore themes of Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome, Pan-Africanism, and the ever-evolving meaning of blackness in a post-Obama administration America.

The series is expected to premiere this fall on Seeka.tv; a next generation curated platform providing access to the most popular and critically acclaimed independent web series across the globe. The platform boasts nearly 2,000 episodes across more than 150 shows. Seeka.tv offers free viewership from both its online source as well as apps available on iOS, Roku, Amazon Fire, and Android. Jairus Burks (Greenwood, Blue Collar Hustle, CreamXCoffee) will serve as Director Of Photography. Alonge Hawes, in addition to serving as Creator/Director, will serve as Show-Runner for the series. Hawes will executive produce the project alongside George Reese (Utopia Planitia). Jamal Mcclendon, Shani Hawes, and Rodderick Fedd will serve as producers.

Blue Collar Hustle, at least for the moment is finished. It was never meant to last beyond maybe three seasons. I have an outline for a possible third season but honestly I feel like Black On Both Sides is a stronger piece of work and better aligns with what I hope to deliver as a black content creator.

If anyone wants to support the endeavor we have a Gofundme setup for donations.
