Every Leone film gets better on rewatches for me. They feel slow and tedious at first, not once you're no longer concerned with where it's headed and can instead just live in the art, they reveal themselves as brilliant.

Ennio was the fukking man.

This was actually my first time watching it unedited start to finish. A few thoughts

  • I was shocked this got a PG rating considering you see exposed titties, and all the crude, lewd humor
  • Definitely one of the most influential comedies ever, especially for a lot of the "random" humor and cutaway gags that became popular in the following years
  • At the same time it exposes the limits of doing gags based on current references, b/c later generatins are just gonna be confused. It was interesting to me to see which gags remained funny after 40 years; Like the Saturday Night Fever bit probably had audiences rolling in the original theatrical run but just got a chuckle out of me, but on the other hand Roger/Kareem had me :dead:

The gags per minute rate has never been higher.

Had me :what: for the longest but by the time the plot tried to seriously come together in the 3rd act, it was too late. :manny:
