A couple movies I've recently seen that have
actually left an impression on me (The most important thing for ANY work of art imo) :
American Mary, 2012
This is on netflix. It had been in my queue for awhile and I finally got around to watching it. Glad that I did. What a strange film. I guess that the best way to describe it would be...a mix between
American Psycho (Although, without as much outright dark comedy) and....maybe one of those "torture porn" movies although this is extremely NOT a torture porn. There are some unique characters in this (to say the least), but I liked all of the performances. The ending probably wraps up too quickly and neatly for some, but the journey there is very filling.
The Strange Color of Your Body's Tears, 2013
Also on netflix. Honestly, I think the best way to describe it would be to say that it's
European as fukk....
Almost completely an audio/visual experience. An example of what I'm talking about is...there is one scene in black and white, that is really just a series of still photographs. It's a pretentious movie, and I have no real clue what the plot was about, if you can dig something like that than dive in, but if you're not looking for narrative ambiguity than this might not be for you. There *is* a story, a guys wife disappears in a strange apartment building, there is a murderer (murderers) running around. Other people seem to have disappeared in the past. There may be some time jumping. WHAT THE fukk IS GOING ON?
Coherence, 2013
This one is not on netflix, it's on Amazon Prime. I'd describe it as a mixture of....
Primer, and
You're Next (Without the slasher elements). I really liked it, once again, this has ambiguity but there are rules and clues present that can help you piece together what's happening. The basic premise is that a group of friends meet together for a dinner party, a comet passes by and....strange things start happening. Having browsed through the "top sci-fi" thread...I have a feeling that a lot of coli-brehs might enjoy this.
