If the caller saw the kid taking the gun out of a toy box that said "toy gun", then that's an observation and not an assumption.

If the caller had no evidence it was fake, but going off a hunch, it's an assumption.

i gotta listen to the audio again but i believe the news story said he was shooting at the bldg and at cars.

I've found myself in the middle of real gun shootouts on the west-side of chicago and I didn't call the cops. Most people aren't going to call for this, let alone a bb gun.

I had something similar happen to me when I was 15. My friends and I were shooting a rifle BB gun at trees near my house and some cac called the police. Luckily it was 1 black officer that responded to the call. If it was a cac officer I'm 100% sure my friend who was holding the BB gun when the officer pulled up would of been shot. The brother got out of his squad car with his hand near his gun but not drawn and told him to put it down and everybody went home that night. He even lectured us about how we shouldn't mess with BB guns because some people(white people) would assume different things.

Black Brehs/brehettes, don't let your sons play with BB Guns. We already don't get the benefit of the doubt with the law and giving them one of these just leads to this type of bullshyt.

The cop is gonna get off due to the fact he couldn't "assume" it was fake. So we might as well save the our energy. Pretty sure that we all know that if it were a little white boy, chances are he wouldn't have gotten shot. We don't get that same patience with cops.

The cop thought it was a real gun. It looked like a real gun. And a BB gun has the word GUN in it. So what's the issue? The child should not have had it. Now he lost his life which is terribly sad. White people aren't gonna give U a chance to prove you aren't doing something wrong. This is why it's so foolish in the first place to let a child have a weapon like object and one that looked real. What is a parent promoting when they give a child a BB gun? Why let them play with an object like that? BB guns have been known to cause serious damage. And why was it at the rec center? The kis may have been wrong in pulling the fake thing out of his waist but that doesn't justify the cop's actions. Being aware of your surroundings is par for the course and showing up to a place where kids are playing with toys seems like an obvious time to exercise mental checks. Secondly, the kid didn't point the gun at him or anyone else did he?
