I HATE it when mainstream media gets a hold of psychological profiles.:mjlol::mjlol::mjlol:

Suddenly EVERYBODY and their mama wants to be “special” and diagnose themselves with the latest trendy disorder.

It used to be sociopathy. “Yeah I’m a sociopath” says the internet lame trying to be edgy and cool. No. You just got yuck mouf breath and weird tendencies due to social laziness and entitlement.:mjlol:

Being awkward or having issues with non-verbal communication skills does NOT make you autistic.
You might be pseudo-autistic...:lolbron:

But you ain’t got Aspergers which isn’t even a category anymore according to the latest research. And you not a savant. You ain’t on the spectrum.

Stop.
:mjlol: Real people grappling with autism, high functioning or not, know how real shyt is.

In any case, autism is a neurological disorder that impacts parts of the brain necessary for developing and utilizing communication and processing and organizing information. Depending on the severity, it can result in behaviors that reflect very rigid adherence to fixed ideas or render one completely able to communicate.

But usually, the overarching trait is the inability to understand the world through a social lens. In doing so, many don’t develop the same receptive and expressive communicative skills typical in other children. This very self centric cognitive framework leads to a host of other behaviors too. Think about it, outside of narcissists, we are constantly bombarded with stimuli that forces us outside of our own world and perspectives. But the autistic mind that developed far more independently doesn’t really process that stimuli or essentialize it in the same way.

Thus leading to behaviors like:
1.) Fixation-If you live in your own world unfettered by the social demands, you fixate on what’s interested to you 24/7.

2.) Difficulty with Transitions-Related to fixation, if you are fixated on what interests you outside of social demands, you gon be mad as hell when somebody tries to make you transition to another task, right? Even if it’s to help you with bodily functions and basic necessities depending on how far on the spectrum you are.

3.) Flapping/self sexual stimulation other non-normative behaviors-From a behaviorist perspective these behaviors are related to bodily functions serving as a self-reinforcing mechanism. It feels good, so imma do it. So I get fixated on doing it, and because I don’t care about the social shyt, I’ll do it whenever, however...and didn’t I tell yo wack ass I don’t like transitions, so why yo ass over here trying to make me stop jerking off in class.:stopitslime: True story btw.

4.) Non-existent or mild to severely impaired expressive and receptive communication skills. Once again, I live in a world where I don’t process information through a social lens. Sooooo even if I do develop language skills, it ain’t to TALK to YOU. It’s just to get what I want and that’s if I see the need to develop them at all. If I don’t, Imma bang my head in frustration against this wall because yo dumb ass just don’t seem to get it.

5.) Severely impaired social skills-Highly correlated with communication deficits.

Autism can be diagnosed in babies. Most typically developing babies seek out their parents for help, attention and all their needs. Autistic babies oftentimes display high levels of independence and I don’t give a fukk about youism very early on. It’s as simple as a baby trying to get a toy to work and crying out to mama to help. That autistic baby will sit there and work with that toy until he figures it out. It never even enters into his little mind to ask momma for help.:francis: He might cry, but it ain’t for you. It’s out of frustration at not being able to figure the shyt out. Some theorize that mentality may also account for the fixation and transition issues.

Oftentimes, this early orientation towards cognitive solitude can result in some impressive talents in specific domains (savantism) or overall higher cognition. But the majority of the time, it just results in mild social awkwardness or very mild behaviors or severe to moderate behaviors and social/communicative deficits. And yes it’s more often diagnosed in men than in women. My theory is this is due to cognitive differences between the female and male brains with the former having larger percentages of white matter corresponding to social skills and communication and the latter having larger percentage of gray matter for information processing and spatial and other stuff. Females tend to have more cooperation between the two hemispheres, while males operate in specific areas in general. Some theorize this leads to men being more rigid in their logic and women being more flexible. The former could be a risk factor for socio-communicative disorders like autism for men, and emotional disorders like depression for women when that mental flexibility gets too convoluted and messy.

This is a lecture I given in the past.:mjlol:
Hope it helps!

I feel men in general are more "autistic " in a sense. More driven, less worried about social acceptance, etc.

Yes I've heard the female corpus callosum has more communication abilities between the left and right brains.

Let me ask you this, do you feel the incidence of autism is actually rising or it's just being diagnosis more often? Or is it both?

Hit it right on the nose, /thread.

I have to add too, growing up with a brother who was autistic to the point of not processing language, and knowing many people with different degrees of Aspergers, they tend to exhibit the same unmistakable traits. Can be sometimes easy to tell who is and isnt on the spectrum.

This is something we often discuss. Researchers in my circles distinguish between true autism and autism mimicry. I have a colleague who is crafting an article where he talks about how the advent of technology is making our society take on increasingly “autistic like” features. As people become more isolated, he’s arguing that social skills are atrophying. His main point is that it’s not that more kids are necessarily being born autistic, but their brains are developing less social/communicative skills because there’s less need for human interaction the way it was in the past. Here’s a great article on this.
What Are the Effects of Technology on Human Interaction?

This results in behaviors that might have kids misdiagnosed if ur just eyeballing them rather than systematically assessing them.

Most account for increases in incidence of autism from past generations being due to increase diagnosis like you said and awareness. Some neonatologists also link it to social changes such as females having children later in life, changes in environment during pregnancy as well.

I'm sure his inability to read people is from intimate or personal settings, not a theater or room full of spectators
