The hip black friend from an aide is unfortunate I agree. An Obama aide called Hillary a "monster" and then went and bombed Libya. So much for aides.

Sure, but you don't think their comments count as part of the general discourse coming out of a campaign during the election season?

The shucking and jiving comment is out of context and wasn't in reference to Obama.

Eh, maybe, but either way, it's difficult to argue or convince someone either way about these kinds of things. Regardless, this kind of talk is very common during election season, and code words run rampant.

Bill Clinton joined the AA thing with the woman thing and it was true both elections were historic for certain demographics.

Ok, but I'm not sure what your point is with this. I don't think for something to be race-baiting it has to be empirically inaccurate or untrue. It's more about the way these statements relate to one another in the larger discursive field and how their collusion produces certain effects, which are themselves racial/racist.

And Hillary was completely right about the Dr King vs LBJ thing. If she was in office she wouldn't have spent 2.5 years giving republicans the house and waiting for them to reciprocate

I sincerely doubt this. If Bill and her time in NY were any indication, things would not have gone so differently. People seem to have this rosy view of the Clintons as hardline, but I think they were much more moderate and concilatory than people want to remember now.

I think Chris Matthews told on himself with that one. Majority of welfare recipients are white... always have been, always will be, by a large margin. So how is it a "race issue"? And the birther thing is a stretch

You have to be careful with these allegations... if you're going to make them make them w/something that has meat/legs.
The fact may be that most welfare recipients are white but the perception is that the average person on welfare is a minority(non-white) person/family. This has long been a racially coded card that republican politicians use starting with Reagan in the 70s and 80s. Terms like "welfare queens" were used to refer to black women in the inner city not white women in the trailer parks. You told on yourself here.

Breh the reason Hillarycare blew up is she designed the whole thing inside the white house and didn't get real buy in from congress and insurers. It wasn't moderate in the sense of crossing party lines to design it. The reason we got Don't Ask Don't Tell is cause Clinton campaigned on the issue of allowing gays in the military.. otherwise there'd still have been a ban. later Gingrich said he'd shut down the government and Bill Clinton called his bluff! Obama was shook of such a threat during the debt ceiling debate. I can't remember the details of welfare reform but I'm sure the GOP wanted more and the white house fought them on it. Sh1t, they asked bill under oath "is there any sexual relationship" and he figured, well, "is" is the present tense and said "No." That's hardline enough for me. Hillary would have chewed up John Boehner and spat him out.

In a larger sense though, I do think Obama designed legislation with a type of naivete that was very disappointing. Until December 2010 he always started with the conciliatory package and got pushed rightwards on it, rather than starting with an assertive platform and being pushed to the center.

So even bringing up the idea of welfare reform = speaking in racial codes? Where did Romney mention "welfare queens" in his ads? Matter fact, when was the last time anyone mentioned "welfare queens" period?

Were Romney's ads completely baseless and absent of fact? Sure, and I think THAT'S worth talking about. But I'm not going to buy into the "everyone w/any problem w/welfare is racist". shyt there are MANY black folks who see how the culture of dependence enabled by welfare has been a detriment to the black community... if we are going to talk about black people and welfare. So what are you talking about?

I was just checking you for denying that socalled welfare reform has been a racially coded issue that republicans have used years. You denying that it is and has been a racial issue because more whites are on it than blacks is incorrect. You came in here talking about how Matthews told on himself when you seem to be the one that's ignorant. Neitther Matthews or anyone else has taken the "everyone with a problem with welfare is racist" position. You're building strawmen, being obtuse. If you don't get what Matthews was calling some people in the republican party out for doing then you're ignorant.

"Yeah your name's Romney, yeah you were well-born, you went to prep school. Yeah, brag about it, and this guy's got an African name, he's gotta live with it. Look who's gone further in life. Who was born on third base?"

Based Matthews with the Ether :lawd:

I never denied that it was a racially coded issue... as recently as the Tea Party.

My question to you is, where is the proof that Romney was using it as racial code in these ads? And what exactly is Matthews taking Romney to task for in a racial context?

Matthews did a good job of speaking for himself, go back and watch the clip.
