Every last one of Michael Jackson's albums was an R&B album. He was the King of Pop because his R&B albums were so good, everyone listened to them (popular). Make good music, get "Pop" status. :yeshrug:
“Bad” was his most ‘pop’ album but you’re right for the most part. Just like his sister Janet, they made all genres of music.

The issue is, a black artist could make music that is not R&B at all but will still be placed in that category because they’re black. Adele, Sam Smith can make soul/R&B and yet still be put in the pop categories.
she doesn't like it because it's traditionally a genre used to put all black music acts in, regardless of the stylistic elements the said performer has been influenced by and mimics. it's just a label created by critics a long time ago to label black music.

what it does is limit access to markets and audiences that might appreciate her stylings more but sometimes being directly labeled as such will cut you off as people in the industry move in an automated manner.

it's not the association with blackness that's her problem, she's just disappointed with what most non artists accept at some point; people are racist regardless of the art you create. they will attempt to shape your story without much understanding.
You get it.

From Jayz wanting the grammy to give Beyonce album of the year award to these broads being mad because they are categorized as R&B

Black people really want white folks acceptance so fukking bad..

Always want to talk about black this black that, but then still cry because they want white people to give them a hug/award/a pat on the head like a dog

These black celebrities that be complaining about being categorized as black musicians/actors/actresses, etc, makes me really think they hate being black. Begging for white validation is NOT a good look as black people as a collective wants to and trying to move away from being under these cacs.

First SZA now Chloe, why are they so against their music being classified as R&B
:martin:

Because it's a way to keep their music regulated and segregated at radio. There are a shyt ton of pop radio stations that outright refuse to play any black music beyond Lizzo or some older Rihanna records. There are white pop stations that don't even play Beyonce. Maybe they'll play Single Ladies and that's it. The more you keep black artists regulated to the black and mixed channels, the more you ensure black artists aren't competing with white artists the way Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston once were. SZA is now on that superstar turn where she's getting #1 records on the charts and selling a lot of records but if she got the pop radio support she SHOULD get she'd be even bigger which is scary to certain people. They don't want her taking spins (or awards) from Ariana Grande and Olivia Rodrigo so they try to push her into a box whenever possible.

Then they play in people's faces by dictating when it's time to make the black stations support the latest white boy or girl who is making black shyt. Tommy Richman has the #1 rap song in the country right now (until Not Like Us takes it back soon). We had a thread about Funk Flex shytting on that record and then what happened. Within days he was bragging about playing a new Tommy Richman record. So they're allowed to cross over at will, meanwhile multiple county stations still haven't played the new Beyonce album. I'm not even mad at that btw! I'm just saying if they get to say no, we should get to say no too.
