To those against HSR, have you actually taken one? Like the EuroStar?

For intermediate city to city travel, HSR trumps driving or flying. Faster than a car, more comfortable than a plane ride.

DC to NYC might be a 1hr flight, but once you factor in the travel to the airport, TSA, etc the actual door to door travel time with flying vs HSR is about the same.

It’s not all of the US that needs HSR, just some key corridors.

The people that still want to drive and fly can do so

Was watching a doc on Chongqing and dude bought up a point that rarely gets mentioned
The reason why China can complete these massive infrastructure programs while the U.S is stuck in the 20th century is basically China can do whatever they want with their land
Imagine the U.S trying to create an east coast to west coast high speed rail, how many trash ass republican politicians in the mid west would try to block it, how many private land owners would try to play hardball with the government, etc
They were going add a stop to a local rail line in my area and the estimated cost was like $200 million or something crazy for like 5 miles of track. I don't think they ever started yet because local suburban NIMBY are taking them to court so they don't get a train going through their neighborhood. I think something similar happened when the Atl Braves tried to get a rail line extended so fans could catch trains to the games.
It's really not fair to compare the two countries

people still got some property rights.

A lot of Americans have never been on a train period, let alone a high speed train in a foreign country.
