With the KGB all around they probably were studying the effects of the exposure to radiation. This is in the Cold War so nukes were still a major thing. Also I don't think ANYONE knew how bad it was. Maybe Boris and the woman physicist. But then again, the KGB were there to silence any type of information getting out.

My god the acting in this is incredible. I can't believe countries would build nuclear facilities. Its only a matter of time time before this shyt happens again.

What made this one worse than the one in Japan that happened recently?

I've been doing a lot of googling and research since episode 1 because this is crazy fascinating to me. From what I understand the reactor in Chernobyl is the only reactor to ever actually explode. The other major nuclear accidents involved either partial meltdowns, or minor releases of radioactive steam, but the CHernobyl plant is the only one where a reactor totally fukking exploded.

Oh yea, the US isn’t any better than the Russians when it comes to its nuclear past. 3 mile island, Bikini Atoll, the Hanford site, just a few examples of their mishandling of nuclear materials. It just shows how ignorant governments were with this stuff but they couldn’t let up as the other side was also developing nuclear products. Plus we had to keep the MAD initiative intact.

Apparently after 3 Mile Island and Chernobyl there was about a 3 decade stretch where no new nuclear plants were built in the U.S. Then finally people started coming around to nuclear energy again due to the increasing energy demands of the 21st century and the lack of recent accidents. So we built one new plant in the United States, and pretty much right afterwards the Fukushima accident happened in Japan (which was U.S. technology BTW) and then public interest in nuclear power dipped again.

Why do you think the nuclear engineer woman(forgot her name) was arrested by the KBG? An average joe back then would not have the knowledge to understand the effects radiation had.
