The ADL at least recently is quite clearly working to promote the interests of the Israeli government. Defending Musk was important because the Israeli government needs Trump to send them weapons. And Musk is deeply died to Trump.

Every mainstream article about Musk's Nazi salute included at least a line about the ADL saying it was okay. This undercuts any criticism of the salute. The ADL played its part in supporting Trump's regime.

Steven Bannon being less tied to Trump's current term is a figure that they can criticize for making the exact same gesture.
