The National Basketball Players Association is planning to hold a vote on Thursday night or Friday morning regarding the Dec. 22 start format to the 2020-21 season amid the coronavirus pandemic, sources told The Athletic.

The NBPA, led by executive director Michele Roberts, started formal conference calls with players from all 30 teams this week. Players have been holding calls with the NBPA beginning Monday and will go through Thursday morning. Players coming out of several meetings believe a Dec. 22 start is inevitable, sources said.

For the NBA and the players union, the two major issues in discussions so far have revolved around the start date — Dec. 22 or around Martin Luther King Day, Jan. 18 — and the player payments withholding/escrow amount.

The NBPA has told players on calls, as The Athletic has reported, that the financial ramifications of a December start loom large due to the television networks and league partners wanting a Christmas Day start, the Christmas week generating hundreds of millions of dollars of additional revenue, and the schedule returning to the normal October-June timetable for 2021-22.

A January start, meanwhile, would interfere with the 2021 Summer Olympics and affect advertisement sales for the networks.

The union informed players that there have been fears that if the league does not begin on Christmas, the TV partners may want to renegotiate their deals with the NBA.
The NBPA informed players that negotiations surrounding the escrow initially centered around team governors wanting an unlimited escrow, which would allow owners to gain one major escrow in order to receive their 49 percent share of basketball-related income in 2020-21. Talks have gone back-and-forth — with the league pushing 40 percent, then 35 percent and so on, sources said, and the NBPA offering a smoothing escrow over three years.

Now, the NBA and NBPA are in agreement on spreading the escrow over three years: The league is proposing a 25 percent escrow over that time span, while the NBPA is offering 15 percent, sources said. Eighteen percent is viewed as a potential escrow number over three years, according to sources.

For players, the point that has been made is that owners have longevity in the NBA and team prices continue to rise even during the pandemic. So for most players sacrificing escrow dollars, it could impact more for their shelf life than it could an owner with staying power.

Here is how a December start fares compared to a January beginning, according to multiple sources:

Dec. 22 start:
– Dec. 1 training camps begin for three weeks, with three-to-four preseason games
– 72-game regular season
– 14 back-to-back games per team
– 25 percent reduction in travel
– All-Star break for six days in early March
– Regular season ends around May 16
– Play-in tournament for the Nos. 7-10 seeds in the Eastern and Western Conference
– Playoffs begin around May 22
– Finals finish around July 22

Jan. 18 start:
– Camp opens on Dec. 28, for three weeks, and three-to-four preseason
– 60-game regular season
– 24 back-to-back games per team
– 25 percent reduction in travel
– All-Star Break for six days beginning around April 9
– Regular season ends in June
– Play-in tournament for the Nos. 7-10 seeds in the Eastern and Western Conference
– Playoff start around June 28
– Finals end around August 21-23

The NBA and NBPA hope to maintain a salary cap and tax of $109 million and $132 million, respectively, as The Athletic has reported.

Sources say the NBA is proposing to keep the cap and tax flat so more debt is not incurred, but the NBPA is hoping for an increase, sources said.

In addition, a significant portion of the 25-percent salary withholding of player contracts in May will be returned to every player.
