Them ole school musicians don’t play that half-assed singing stuff. Our band directors used to scare the shyt outta us if we couldn’t read music or if our notes were flat or sharp.

They did not play!
“Getcho ass off the microphone if you ain’t gon sing it like you mean it!”
:damn: :mjcry:And they ain’t play with all them ad libs either.
“Hold THE DAMN NOTE!”
:mjcry::mjcry::mjcry:
Artists these days get waaaaay more leeway vocally.

But yeah I like both versions too lol. But Chaka trippin. She be sittin over there with that big ass voice and all that range calling the rest of us mere mortals flat.

I remember Whitney talking to Brandy like that too,
“Why are you down there?!”

(“Because we ain’t you Whitney!”:mjcry:)

This is so true!

My choir director and band director were like this. Had us all scared :sadcam:

Had us singing acappella one at a time… and if you were sharp or flat :mjcry:

“GTFO!” :pacspit:

My choir director threw his coffee at me once :mjcry:

Awww. I like Mary’s version. Didn’t realize she felt that way about it
I liked it also. I think one thing many people aren't aware of about Diddy when he produces R&B is he often tells singers no bravado in the singing. This seems to give songs uniqueness. I wonder if that's maybe what he did here?

Above the fray.
I saw her say something similar sitting right next to Mary . She said that Mary always sings out of key.

Part of that seems to be that Mary came up under Puffy and rap producers. Vocalists from previous eras came up in bands, with composers, and arrangers.

Bottom line is agree or disagree, who is qualified to comment on Chaka's takes about singing? Nobody.

I can see that being part of it. But I also think Mary is special in that her ability to emote is so top tier that it often overrides her lack of technical ability. I can't think of another singer where this holds true.

Brehs, y’all have to watch the entire episode. It is an hour long, but you will not get bored at all. Chaka is one of those old-school G’s that has lived A LIFE, and knows how to tell it. Ain’t gonna lie tho, pretty sure she was obliterated here (we know how Auntie gets down) but it made it even more hilarious.

EDIT: At the end, she didn’t even know who Rod Stewart was; she even says “Rob Stewart” and was thinking hard about who he was…even though they had worked together previously. I’m outta here
