Inaugural Patty Fest in Toronto’s Little Jamaica celebrates beloved dish

toronto_jamaican_patties

Patty Fest is on this Saturday, Aug. 5 in Little Jamaica on Eglinton West.
Toronto is a patty town, with decades-old debates on which bakery, or subway station, serves the best one. You have the classic spicy beef with a scotch bonnet kick, the carb-tastic patty stuffed in sweet coco bread, veggie versions with potato and callaloo, and now, the recent popular kind, of splitting open a patty and stuffing it with burger toppings. So, it only seems natural for there to be a Toronto Patty Fest this weekend in Little Jamaica.

“I swear, Toronto eats the most patties per capita outside of Jamaica,” says organizer Lori Beazer, founder of the Afro-Caribbean Farmers’ Market (where the festival is being held). “They’re on every street corner in every convenience store. It’s this iconic, one-handed Caribbean snack food that’s relatively affordable. I know it saved (my life) during college because it stretched you over until dinner time.”

Beazer chose not to call this festival the Jamaican patty festival in order to recognize the different regional variations of the patty, as well as newer iterations created by young chefs. “Patties are also changing. You can have them stuffed and every Caribbean island has its own version.”

The patty has come a long way since the 'Toronto Patty Wars" Beazer says. For her, the patty remains an enduring fixture in the city’s food scene that’s constantly evolving. “It’s been amazing because it just demonstrates the convenience and heartiness of the patty.”

What to expect at Patty Fest

Beazer hopes this weekend’s festival will encourage more foot traffic in Little Jamaica, a neighbourhood whose businesses have been under economic hardship after more than a decade of road work for the Eglinton LRT.
There will be four vendors at the inaugural Patty Fest on Aug. 5 from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 1531 Eglinton Ave. W. Admission is free.

  • Le Bercail will be serving West African pastels stuffed with beef, tuna or chicken.

  • Bean’s Bistro will be offering a patty stuffed with beef, peas and corn as well as a vegan chickpea and potato patty.
  • Spike Your Food will be serving four different styles of patties stuffed with either stewed beef, salt fish, jerk chicken as well as one with longganisa, hot sausage, and corn.

  • And Gabees will be making Haitian patties with fish, chicken, beef or vegetables.

Beazer adds it’s also worth checking out the Reidies Patties shop a short walk west from the festival site.

To cool off, drink stalls include fruit juices from Johnson’s Juicery and tropical bubble tea from Mermaid’s Find. There will also be free face-painting for kids and a magician for entertainment.

Doug E. Fresh Gets Extra Spicy With His Latest Project

Aug 28, 2023

The beatboxing pioneer partnered with McCormick to help launch the seasoning giant’s new look, the first packaging update in decades. Here’s how that cool collaboration happened and why you’ve got to listen to the entertaining rollout rhyme it inspired.

BET Awards 2023 - Show

There’s something extra fresh about this snappy red cap campaign rolled out by the venerable McCormick, the Hunt Valley, Maryland-based spice company with humble beginnings. The founder launched his business from his Baltimore home basement in 1889.

Bringing Doug E. Fresh on board to promote the launch of a new look might seem like a stretch. Until you learn that when he’s not performing on stage, he’s known as Doug E. Chef.

“There’s no question, I love to cook,” he said in a recent phone interview. “Sometimes when I’m on the road, I’ll get a hotel room with a kitchen just so I can make my own food.”

He soaked up his skills while watching the family cook. “My father used to cook a lot, he still does and my mother cooked. Coming from a Caribbean family, it was just something we did without paying a lot of attention. But then, one day and you’re the only one home and you’re hungry. After I started cooking, I got passionate about it.”

Doug E. — who’s known for pioneering the bet-you-wish-you-could-do-it beatboxing sound — and his signature dance floor moves said he was pumped about the prospect of mixing two of his favorite things, music and food. “It’s the 40th anniversary of the last time McCormick introduced a new look for its packaging and the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, so I got very excited about it,” he said.

EPIC Caribbean Food Tour! SPICY Jerk Chicken, Oxtail, & CRAZY Scorpion Pepper Sauce! | Heat Eaters

First We Feast

Aug 14, 2023
Are you ready for a taste of the tropics? In this episode of Heat Eaters, our host, Chef Esther Choi, embarks on a fiery food journey through the vibrant Little Caribbean neighborhood in Brooklyn, NY.

Esther's culinary adventure starts off at Irie Jerk Chicken, where she links up with singer and Brooklyn-native, Justine Skye. Together, they feast on succulent Jamaican spicy jerk chicken paired with sweet festival bread, and eat scotch bonnet peppers straight from a spicy escovitch sauce.

Next, Esther joins her friend Pierre "Chef P" Serrao, co-founder of the Bronx Culinary Collective - Ghetto Gastro. Together they hit up Ariapita, renowned for its authentic Trinidadian Homestyle cuisine. Chef Osei "Picky" Blackett serves up a medley of Trinidadian dishes, including spicy fruit chow, Chinese-style wings, and flavorful oxtail curry - all accompanied by a side of explosive Trinidad Scorpion Pepper Sauce. Ranked next to the notorious Carolina Reaper, the Trinidad scorpion pepper is revered as one of the world's hottest peppers!

In the grand finale, Chef P and Esther meet up with Andre Springer, the founder and mastermind behind Shaquanda's Hot Pepper Sauce - well known for being featured on Hot Ones. The culinary trio steps into the kitchen to cook up saltfish takoyaki, a recipe from Ghetto Gastro's 'Black Power Kitchen' cookbook. The fried snack is a nod to Andre and Chef P's Barbadian heritage and mirrors the popular Bajan snack - fish cakes

29 August 2023

There was a lively atmosphere at PiAngo Fest Back-to-School Edition as patrons sampled the wide variety of mango and pineapple products.
The event, held on Sunday, from 10 am to 8 pm, featured extraordinary products by vendors including mango sorbet and pineapple snow cones.

On the count of three, children participating in the mango eating competition ate as many of the large fruit they could, within the five minutes allotted. Maria Walters emerged as the winner, eating four mangoes within the time.

The four participating adults in the pineapple-eating competition were challenged with the task of eating the most pineapples of the fifteen Antigua Black Pineapples provided.
Two adults were tied after eating four pineapples each, and they faced-off against each other in a bonus round. Jodianne Charles emerged victorious after consuming two of the three pineapples shared between them, successfully defending her title.

In the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA)/ Caribbean Union Bank (CUB) Agro-processing Competition, Nakima Williams of Kima’s Delectables captured the most titles, winning the Sauces, Jams/Jellies/Marmalade, Chutney/Anchar, and the Cakes/Pastries categories.
Elsbeth Higgins of Beth’s Buy followed with two titles, winning the Juices/Nectar, and Confectionaries categories. Winning the smoothies/Ice cream/Sorbet category was Roquell Millington of Popular Toppaz 268, while Michelle Toussaint of Ladli Brews captured the Wines category.

In keeping with the back-to-school theme, the event featured entertainment from junior calypso and soca artists including ‘Jai’liah’, and the ‘Mighty Baka’, at the TN Kirnon Primary School venue.
In 2019, the Mango Fest was rebranded PiAngo Fest, highlighting the country’s famous Antigua Black Pineapple along with a variety of mangoes.
