CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR: William Hurt Says He Plays a “Much Different” General Ross

We knew the third Captain America movie from Marvel Studios was going to be big when they announced the subtitle—Civil War—in addition to Robert Downey Jr.’s co-starring status. But when Marvel unveiled the full cast list, it was positively humungous. It includes the entire new Avengers team that assembled at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron, as well as Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man, a new character played by Martin Freeman, and an old character who made his first and only appearance in The Incredible Hulk—the “forgotten” Marvel movie.

William Hurt reprises his role as General Ross in Captain America: Civil War, and when the movie hits theaters next spring it will have been eight years since the release of Hurt’s Hulk movie. That film was only Marvel Studios’ second release as an independent studio, and it came out the same year as Iron Man, at which point the Marvel Cinematic Universe was still a far off dream.

But now it appears that Marvel Studios is ready to finally make The Incredible Hulk feel like less of an outlier in its library, as they’re bringing in Hurt’s character for Civil War. IGN recently caught up with the actor and he explained that the General Ross you see in Civil War won’t necessarily resemble the Incredible Hulk Ross too closely:

“I loved playing Ross the first time because I was able to try and create an ego as big as the monster he was chasing. And one that was as warped too. [Ross in Civil War] is different because it’s a different style. It’s a more modernized style. And what they’ve done is they’ve taken a character who was the Ross from the older film and made a new version. This is a much newer Ross. A much different Ross. And I liked that a lot. I haven’t had a lot of time to understand it, but I’m doing the best I can. And they haven’t fired me yet.”

I love the fact that Hurt admits the complexities of this vast Marvel Universe are somewhat confusing, but it sounds like he’s enjoying returning to the MCU all the same. And if bringing Ross into Civil War is the first step in moving towards another eventual Hulk movie, all the better. Though since Marvel’s slate is already full with other films through the year 2020, I’m not exactly holding my breath.

On the Marvel side of things, extensive details were provided for Captain America: Civil War, currently shooting in Atlanta, with co-director Joe Russo stating that the story revolved around “collateral damage” after action by the Avengers results in the loss of life.

The video also highlighted the on-screen friction between Captain America and Iron-Man.

“The name Civil War implies there are sides,” said Robert Downey Jr.

With production on Doctor Strange commencing soon, no footage was available of the upcoming new superhero IP, but artist impressions of Benedict Cumberbatch in the lead role were offered. In a video message, producer Kevin Feige said that the actor was perfect for the role, offering a “complicated emotional structure.”

Disney’s presentation concluded with a full — though unfinished — screening of Ant-Man, due to have its world premiere in Los Angeles next week.

When Ant-Man director Peyton Reed sat down with Entertainment Tonight during the recent press junket, the filmmaker was asked about Paul Rudd's (Scott Lang) inclusion in the highly-anticipatedCaptain America: Civil War. "I had the Russo brothers, who are directing Captain America: Civil War, brought into the cutting room. So, I show them a bunch of footage from Ant-Man because they were gonna be working with Paul," he said. "I felt very protective about the character. I was like, 'No he wouldn’t say that, he would say this!' It was great. It was a great back and forth."

Peyton Reed continued, "When Paul went to shoot for a couple days on Civil War, I felt really envious. I felt like my girlfriend had left me and gone off with the other guy. But it was great, Paul called up and he was so excited [saying] 'I know I'm a superhero - we just did an entire movie together - but now I'm in this other movie, and I'm like talking to Captain America, it really is sinking in. I'm a part of the Marvel Universe!’ He was like a kid, it was amazing!"

Meanwhile, Paul Rudd has confirmed to BlackTreeTV that he's finished filming Civil War, and he also reiterated with ET his experience on the 2016 Marvel adaptation. "I went to the set ofCaptain America 3 and all of a sudden I’m standing next to some of the Avengers and I turned into, like a little kid!" he said. "And they’re calling me by my character name!"

Continuing Steve Roger's legacy?
Bucky Barnes' CRUCIAL Role in Captain America: Civil War Revealed!
by Eleanor Tremeer ⋅ Posted on July 4th, 2015 at 4:08am
Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Bucky has become a figure of intrigue and sympathy, with fans desperate to know what's in store for Cap's best friend turned assassin. And with Sebastian Stan's contract officially extended beyond Chris Evans', some startling developments are coming up in Captain America: Civil War.

Bucky Barnes is going to play a "crucial role" in the impending skirmish, confirmed directors Anthony and Joe Russo, and the stakes for the ex-Howling Commando have never been higher.

"He has to get everyone on his side by the end of this movie, because his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is about to get a lot bigger.”
So how will the Winter Soldier go from mortal foe to trusted ally? Here's what we know so far (obviously, there may be spoilers so proceed with care!)

Steve Rogers and Tony Stark in Captain America 3
Political pressure and Avengers divided
The official synopsis has cast some light on why Earth's Mightiest Heroes find themselves at war with one another. In the original comic, after various events cause deaths of civilians the Superhuman Registration Act is enforced, a law that will force all superheroes to reveal their secret identities and face accountability. But while the Marvel comic universe has literally hundreds of heroes with different allegiances, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has... nine. Including the new additions to the team in The Avengers: Age Of Ultron. This was initially the source of much criticism when it was revealed that Civil War would be the plot of the next Captain America film, but in their synopsis the Russos seem to have found a way to make it work.

"After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain."
So instead of unmasking the heroes (pretty pointless as, with the exception of Bruce Banner and Clint Barton, all of The Avengers' identities are public), Captain America: Civil War will be about controlling them. This leads on nicely from Captain America: Winter Soldier, which saw S.H.I.E.L.D. abolished, leaving the Avengers free of government sponsorship. But will this plot trace over the same steps as the previous film?

has promised that the events of this film with be groundbreaking, saying that the situation will be "a whole new ball game" by the end of the film. Chris Evans added that this will be a jumping off point into The Avengers: Infinity War, with CA: Civil War setting up "the real battle" that is yet to come. But never fear: this film is not just one big lead in to Infinity War. Feige promised that CA: Civil War is "very much a sequel to Captain America 2 in a way I don't think people will expect."

Bucky's redemption
Just what does all this mean for our favourite brainwashed assassin? We've had plenty of hints about Bucky's role, and new additions to the cast like Black Panther and Crossbones can help us get an idea of exactly how this story will play out.

Bucky Barnes is going to be a pursued man, with not one, not two, but four separate characters after him! Of course we already know that Cap and Falcon are hot on Bucky's tail, but after a potential theft of vibranium, Black Panther starts the hunt as well. And with Agent Frank Grillo taking up his villainous persona Crossbones, he'll be after the Winter Soldier to indoctrinate him back into Hydra's evil cult. The Russos are determined to delve deeper into Bucky's story.

"Philosophical questions that we would want to deal with in Cap 3 would be, you know, is he redeemable? Where does he live now? Does he ever regain his memories? If he doesn’t regain his memories, can you call him Bucky Barnes, or is he somebody new?"
So there are clearly two major plotlines at play here: the "international incident" leading to government control, and the race to find Bucky first.

It's possible that the two plotlines are not so separate after all: the incident could well be caused by the Winter Soldier, or at least have him in the mix, leading to public outcry about this rogue figure and demands for him to be unmasked. And let's not forget that as the Winter Soldier murdered Tony Stark's parents, it may be difficult for Iron Man to support Bucky in this divisive issue. The question comes down to whether Bucky is a victim or a villain or, as the Russos put it, "the world's most feared assassin or longest serving prisoner of war."

Facing the past.
A bigger role in the future
If the MCU is going to follow the comic canon, Bucky Barnes is definitely due for a rise to heroic status. Of course it hasn't been confirmed yet, but there are some big changes on the horizon that may see Bucky (or Sam Wilson) take up Captain America's mantle and continue Steve Rogers' legacy. Whether this will have been established by Infinity War is yet to be revealed but one thing's for certain: Captain America 3: Civil War is going to be a real game changer!

I'm glad spidey is back with marvel but man keep him out of this. there's no need, no ROOM for something as big as spiderman in this.

Just give him the post credits scene.

Feige already said BP is integral and he won't comment on Spidey's involvement so anything on that front is a rumor right now

i hope there's references to him, maybe a glimpse of Wakanda tech, BP's outfit/claw/shadow, but not a full blown reveal :manny:

for Spidey, maybe we see Peter, some remnants of webbing, stories about a costumed vigilante.....no way we see Spiderman (ie. costume)
