I think if their really going to go that route they need to show how Tony views friendship and delve into his psyche a little. Here's a guy, one of the richest, most successful men in the MCU whose also a cocky playboy who can back up his shyt. Being that type of person with that much notoriety more than likely doesn't afford him many close relationships. His closest friends are Rhodey and Pepper, and look how he acts around them, his persona is almost ALWAYS "on", it's his true "suit" if you will.
I could see someone like Tony actually really looking up too and valuing Steve's respect. This is a guy who his father knew and probably spoke extremely highly of, a guy who Nick Fury didn't even HESISTATE to make the Leader of the Avengers (while Tony at first was relegated to a consultant role) a guy who doesn't need nor want to wrap himself around his own ego, Steve probably wouldn't even know it, but I'd wager Tony would put a fairbamount of stock in being comrades with Steve.
