Prior to the hearing, the California State Athletic Commission sent one of the inserts to the Bureau of Forensic Services at the California Department of Justice for testing. The Commission rejected a request by Margarito’s attorney to allow his own expert to analyze the inserts. The lab results were not in before the hearing. On March 19, 2009, the Bureau of Forensic Services forwarded a report to the CSAC that read, “Calcium and sulpher, two elements found in plaster of Paris, were found on the submitted gauze pad using an X-ray fluorescence [XRF] spectrometer. The elements calcium, sulpher, and oxygen are found in plaster of Paris. These three elements are also found in substances other than plaster. Oxygen is not detectable by XRF.”

Margarito’s defense team contends that calcium and sulpher are also common elements in hand cream and salves.

if it was indeed plaster they would find all the elements in the plaster.

i think he did try and get a edge by using old guaze that has stiffened up by sweat and constant pressure... it would be similar to illegaly wrapping ur hands the wrong way.

I mostly agree. Which is why when all the "plaster" stuff is brought up, I say "proof?"


I do think his trainer was stuffing the wraps with the old inserts, which of course worked in his advantage, but I dont think Margs knew.


As far as why people always say he used plaster on Cotto? It's because they've already made up their mind instead of reviewing actual facts. Cotto never sued, why not? If he had this proof he was beaten with Plaster Of Paris for 11 rounds, he would have valid grounds for a lawsuit and Margs would've been arrested and thrown in jail. Nothing happened.


The CSAC suspended him for only 1 year instead of giving him a lifetime ban...stating that they came to the conclusion that Margs didnt know about the inserts, but he's still responsible for his team and their actions, which is fair.


The biggest thing to me, is even Naazim Richardson HIMSELF said that a fighter might not know if he had extra inserts in his wraps or not, which is huge being that even Naazim Richardson couldnt tell by looking at them either. He had to actually grab one & press down on it to know it was there and Margs wasnt around when the knuckle pads were being done. He was only there for the wrapping.


Guilty of using inserts? Yes.

Guilty of knowingly cheating? No.
