What you mentioned is not a backup plan...its a modus operandi for how you would be in the relationship. Deciding that you're going to give 80% to your dude and keep 20% for yourself is basically a waste of time in terms of a long lasting relationship. It simply will have no chance of working over an extended period of time. If you don't feel comfortable giving 100% in a relationship in general, then you should wait until you are.
As far as a backup plan, are you referring to money? Well, that's fine...just keep a bank account with an amount that you save for getting yourself on your feet in anything were to happen. But that's not just for a relationship...that's just good financial sense. I don't think your dude would have a problem with you having a rainy day fund as I'm sure he would want one as well.
