Can we go back to tv shows with at least 20 episodes per season?

8-10 is the sweet spot. Minimal filler and good acting is all I need :yeshrug:

plus it usually leaves people wanting more so it works out

sitcoms though definitely have to be longer since the episodes are shorter anyways

I don’t really see the value to me as a viewer in watching these shows weekly. I usually wait until it all airs and watch it all over a weekend.

yeah but some shows are so popular that social media takes over and you have to watch it on time with the world.

It’s a little different with these streaming services because they’re not taking mid season breaks or skipping weeks.

The shows you listed are episodic, meaning each episode is usually its own self contained story. Its easier to crank out 20 episodes when one has nothing to do with the other and its all about random shyt, plus they only 30 minutes long. TV has moved toward each season being one long ass story. 20 episodes is a lot to ask for in a serial tv format.

I understand - I hate it when shows are too short or there's too much time between one season and the next. That said, the shows being more condensed is probably better in terms of quality.

I've been watching Line Of Duty recently (UK show) and honestly, I'm glad they only do 6 episode seasons because by the time you're finished with a couple of episodes, you're completely drained. It's an intense show, slightly similar to Luther but less wacky. I don't think Cobra Kai would work with more episodes in a season either.

On the other hand, some of the more frivolous shows could do with more eps. A show like Rick and Morty for example would be even bigger if it had more eps per season.

I remember tv shows having longer seasons. I looked up some 90s shows.

NYPD Blue: 22 episodes
Married With Children: 26 episodes
Beverly Hills 90210: 32 episodes
ER: 22 episodes

Now, we’re waiting 1-2 years in between seasons just for 9-12 episodes, not to mention these limited series with one season of 6 to 8 episodes.

:dahell:
They were also 30 minutes max breh

Blame streaming.

It's not even a streaming specific thing. The classic cable Drama (late 90s and on) has about 12 episodes per season.
It was only network shows (procedurals and sitcoms in particular) having those long ass seasons because the advertisers wanted it that way.

If you want drama with A LOT of episodes, check out "Resurrection: Ertugrul" on Netflix.

It's in Turkish with English subtitles and covers the Templar Knights, rise of the Ottomans, the Mongols etc.

5 seasons total and EACH season has AT LEAST 70+ episodes......episodes are 45-ish minutes each. That shyt will keep someone occupied for a looooong time.

It works for sitcoms not for other stuff. I fukking hated how all the marvel Netflix shows had 13 episodes. Way too much filler.
I don’t think the problem with the Marvel Netflix shows were the number of episodes. They could have filled out their main plots with smaller, more self-contained subplots to fill some of those episodes. But instead of that, they just resorted to repeating the same story beats over and over, e.g. Jessica hunts Kilgrave, Jessica catches Kilgrave, Kilgrave kills someone and escapes at the end of the episode, rinse and repeat. The main problem with these shows is that they were poorly-plotted and paced.
