Can we ban the words "bad writing", "plot armor", "rushed" and "fan service" from The Film Room?

Blame tv tropes. That site didn't invent any of those terms, but it led to an exponential boom in the use of them.

It's basically the nerd bible

What's so bad about these terms? I get people overusing them, but they can all be useful in explaining critiques in a concise way.

I will most def say a character has plot armor if the writer puts them into a situation they have no logical means of surviving (by the laws of that universe) and gets them out in a ham-fisted manner.

Fanservice isn't even a bad thing half the time.

I don't think fan service is inherently bad, but there are good ways and bad ways to do it like anything else

Star Wars has a lot of really bad fan service that they try to shoe horn into the narrative and they've abused it to the point where people don't even care anymore.

The reaction to Darth Maul in Solo for a lot of people was "What?:mjlol:" and not :ohhh::krs:like the studio was likely expecting

And DAMN we don't need to see C3po and R2 in shyt else:mjlol:

Endgame on the other hand was packed with fan service and it was mostly fine. Even the really silly fan service didn't ruin the movie.

the reason why we have R2 and C3PO in every thing is simple and was previously explained by George years back.

SW is a story for kids and its being told through the eyes on R2 and 3PO. They're the narrators which is why SW:ANH starts with them

People in here saying we are mad cause yall aint love the movie or show as much as we did and thats not it, its people not knowing how to express their opinions without using the same buzzwords to garner daps or likes.. most opinions are not expressed very well on here and you cant get meaningful discussion cause people dont know how to have a discussion.

The people on the coli or twitter arent film critics, they will just say "it was trash, do better" or " you can tell it was rushed, why because I aint like it"

thats what pisses me off, No context, no one elaborates, no one explains their gripes, and often times they act like they could do better

Then you have the types that actually like the movie or show, but only mention the negatives, and that comes off like you only had bad things to say meaning you aint like it.. why not list all your thoughts when you make these posts? the good and bad? this aint twitter you can type more than 130 characters

But back to the topic your original opinion shouldn't mimick everyone else to the point that everyone is using the same words or phrases. There is no way so many people uses the term plot armor in their day to day, I only hear that shyt here. How original is that thought

I agree... people basically start a debate and don't know how to debate and their answer is pretty much because i said so

I didn’t watch Avengers, but the GOT critiques is straight up bandwagoning & mob mentality at this point.

Literally one of my fav GOT YTers was excited as sh!t reacting to S8E3...two days later, the same youtuber couldn’t get through one single line of a S8E3 recap, without heavy sarcasm. How did the energy change so drastically & swiftly if you weren’t following the crowd boo?

Secondly, the most hilarious happenstance, post GOT S8E3, is people really thinking that they are the secret lovechild of GRRM, who inherited the gift of storytelling & extreme capability of finishing GRRM’s masterpiece - only to give us their best impersonation of a tragic Lee Daniels script. Bish.....They need to burn all y’all rewrites with fire!!! LOL

OP thinks he has plot armor out here with rushed threads and thinking that he's doing a fan service by banning words... :camby:

Only fan service he's providing is the chance for a Neg Train

You think your plot armor is strong enough to take them shots on Coli Day?

This is where I can't tell if nikkas are misunderstanding intent or being disingenuous

Most of the criticism you're seeing either GOT ain't about where the plots are going it's how they're getting there.

Jamie been obstensibly trash for all these seasons, the show has gone out of its way to remind you he only has one hand, he's not the fighter he used to be etc. To have that built up narrative then turn around and have him taking out hordes of wights is silly. Maybe you enjoy seeing sword fights and don't care. That's FINE:manny:

Sam holding his own with elites while still managing to find time to cry on the ground is ridiculous bruh:mjlol:. Keeping Sam alive is not the issue, it's the goofy ass way the writers did it.

I'll even account for there being a few bandwagon complainers. But there's an undeniable drop in quality since the show has lost the books as an anchor and people are noticing it.

And once again where was this level of criticism for seasons 1-6??? Nobody wants to answer this question while leaning on "The show is fine y'all just wanna be mad about something"

It ain't like nikkas all woke up one day saying GOT fell off just because. This sentiment has been steadily rising since season 7, coming off an arguably GOAT season 6

Yall are bugging. These are legitimate criticisms of a show. Game of thrones was great because no one on the damn show had plot armor, you thought anyone could get got. I still enjoyed the episode a ton but I was also annoyed by things that could've easily been corrected. Just have Sam hiding in the crypts not out there doing snow angels in a pile of zombies and living. Don't film Jon hiding behind a tiny rock that saves him from dragon fire. They literally said they had lil girl mormont not die on the first blow and killed the giant because the fans like her. I realize it's fan fiction at this point but those are easily correctable issues. I enjoyed the overall story and many other aspects of the episode.

Tyrion should be dead. The Hound should be dead. Jon Snow should be dead 5x over. Sam should be dead. Jorah, Grey Worm & Daavio should've been dead. Dany should be dead. Arya conveniently met and trained with every infamous merc and assassin in the 7 Kingdoms, and they all took a liking to her. Every single one. Sam and Bran both discovered that Jon was a Targ and gave him that info right before the huge battle. Everything is plot armor until you get to the conclusion of someone's story, because everything you write is about leading up to that point for the character. You can't pick and chose what to nitpick about, when it's all the same.

to me ...
Fan Service to me ... is putting in something the Fans want to see but not because it makes sense just because fans want to see it...

ex.. cap and the hammer made sense in the context it delivered. it wouldn't have made sense in the AoU joke scene.. they didn't give the "fan service" but they hinted..

But it happened in the comics, so no matter when it happens, it's still fan service. It's for them.

This is why although I thought the girl power shot in Endgame was :mjlol: I still didn't mind that much because comics are full of moments like those. Especially in them big splash page wars
