I am kinda warming up to McCarthy as head coach.
I worry if Ben Johnson would just become Matt Nagy 2.0.
Valid concern, but Johnson has the paperwork in buffing up Goff in DETROIT of all places.
In what I've passively read/heard about Johnson in regards to Goff himself is that BJ helped him open up his passing mental in brain picking with plays. Johnson apparently takes feedback well and leans into what you see and learn in the play. Other offensive side players has said Johnson tends to work for you, rather than fully needing to adopt HIS strategy. Someone like Waldron apparently seemed to have more of a "let's see where this takes us" free flow approach and Johnson is moreso "how can I get the result I want" in pulling from your experience. Not sure how much of that is fluff because you know how players are in speaking into the fanbase or media. But it does sound like Johnson is ever-adapting.
On the contrary, just looking at how things played out, Nagy was mostly rigid in his scheme. Remember the day Fields got murdered in the Browns game? Nagy felt he shouldn't have to adapt the playbook to going from Dalton to Fields. He expressed knowing the need for a better run game, but didn't incorporate it. Or the "I didn't come here to run the I-Formation" like in one of the post games. He's not an idiot. So on.
There is/was the goof of having Reid be the salesman. Nagy was apparently the most HC-ready on his staff. Probably true, but he let his own belief in himself destroy himself.
My biggest fear for Johnson is becoming someone like Gase at worst, and Fangio at best. Neither were good at the HC position, but Gase hella flamed out and Fangio seems to be running the rest of the race as coordinator.
