What's the solutions to all of our issues though? They micromanage. They annoy. They nag. They ask personal questions. They make us miserable.

Its almost like there's zero you can do to get them to leave you alone. If you're excellent at your job, they test you consistently. If you're terrible at your job, theyre constantly trying to throw you under the bus for brownie points.

If you're not a jester, they're on alert and you're under suspicion. If you are a jester/mammy, you erode your own mental health.

Wonder if it’s a difference at startups with 20 somethings and 30 somethings only ... I’ve only visited a few (never worked there), and the vibe looks chill af. Last one I went to, they were in there poppin champagne .

sing a creole song to me (i am haitian and they think all creole is haitian) i sing one of their local songs back...every morning until they get tired of it.....fukk i once started started the singing before they even got a chance to start mine....

Drop little nuggets of useless info, I’m a foodie a bit so every now and again I bring up a new food spot that’s opened in the city.

Before I worked at my current company, I worked at more corporate and “political” places. And that’s where I really learned the game to be political but in a way where I’m not kissing ass nor am I selling myself or my next black man out.

Plus we don’t live in a world anymore where if your really trynna rise to the top and make moves, you can be isolated and stuck to yourself.

You have to know how to network, create a specific type of relationship and know how to parlay that into something that benefits you better down the line.

I’m a naturally (in person) shy, quiet, mysterious type person. But at work I learned and know how to be the charming social butterfly when it calls for that.

Sidenote this is probably the first job I had where I didn’t have “an office wife” or fukk one of my coworkers.

I honestly prefer a little eclectic mix ... a dab of obnoxious retorts, sprinkled with a little , no nonsense, professional straightforwardness and a dash of kill em with kindness ...

I try to evaluate every situation not only on its own merits but then place it into broader context accounting for as many variables as I can ... them cacs make you stay sharp . Shyt honestly , white and black folks on that dumb shyt make you stay sharp ... but when white folk get on that dumb shyt, it’s some other, weirdo shyt .

But I’d really like to know about a black person’s experience at a startup tho ... I recall that big thread about the black female who works a google ( not a startup anymore but still has that kinda atmosphere) saying they only hire “certain type of black people” ...

I can feel you’re sis as I too am the only black person in my office.

But I found ways to navigate that.

Just ask them questions and pretend like you’re interested. People love to talk about themselves especially white office folks.

She do that and she can just let them rant then it’s like “ok well good talk, gotta get started” and that alone counts as being social

I also recently got hip to social cues, like having a coffee present will signal that you're "tired" and not up for anything other than small talk

My youngest sister works at a crazy work place y’all. She started the job in August. The cacs are nosey asf at her job too.

She said that every morning, as soon as she gets in they start asking all these questions, she can barely eat her breakfast without them all in her face. She said she doesn’t like talking first thing in the morning because she’s not in the mood. She’s tried putting on headphones so that they get the clue, but they still kept talking, even tapping on her shoulder to get her attention.

One day she was really not with it and just straight up ignored them when they tried talking to her. So they asked her if everything was okay, etc. and what was wrong and wouldn’t let it go. In effort to keep her job she lied and told them she barely got sleep.

So the next day she just came in earlier so she could eat in peace without them all in her face. It worked for a few days but then they implemented a policy where every Monday they each have to stand up and say what they did over the weekend, like there in fukking school. Like legit forcing her to share information with their nosey asses.

Every time she tries to go out to lunch, her boss wants to tag along. She just started bringing her lunch and eating at her desk now—

They started a sharing series where every Thursday they have to share something extremely personal about themselves to everyone else. She said two people were crying last week as they were revealing their personal stories.


And now the newest policy is every Friday they have dance parties and each one of them have to take a turn being a dj... it’s a bunch of old white ladies. Imagine being forced to attend these parties with old cacs dancing all around you. She said she was standing there last week looking like this as the cacs were dancing around her.

One of them said, “why aren’t you dancing, don’t be scurred” and she said she legit wanted to quit in that moment. Told me yesterday that this job is burning her soul.

Me- it was ok, Kim. Didn’t do much but relax. {that right there as it was checked off the box to answer the question vaguely and not answer at the same time shutting down more inquiring questions} But how about you? {Deflecting back to them} Did you go on any hot dates? {Puts them in a position they was trynna put you in and allow them to just do an information dump}

Next thing you know, you satisfied the achievement of being social, cool, and had a conversation with someone without saying more than 20 words

It’s not really that painful and annoying to not be a dikk.

My naturally personality is an a$$hole but even I know how to control that
