Both teams have an equal pass completion rate. Actually, these two teams are the top two passing sides of the entire tournament. But Germany has completed far more passes, probably because all of Argentina's passes end with Messi, whereas Germany spreads their possession among more players. Mascherano is clearly the best passer of the tournament so far, but the two next best passers are Kroos and Lahm, with Schweinsteiger, Boateng, and Mertesacker also in the top 10. Gago and Garay are 9th and 10th, but the overall point is that Germany has more well-rounded players who contribute to the passing game than Argentina.

Really, the more I look at the stats, the clearer it is that Mascherano is what makes the whole Argentinian team work. He's the best passer and a top 5 defensive player in this tournament. If Germany marks Mascherano out of the game, Messi will have to drop deeper and deeper to get the ball. The job will likely fall to Schweinsteiger or Kroos.

Bastian v. Mascherano is gonna be the battle to watch truly....Without Javier, Argentina is NOT in this game. Let's just hope he wasn't truly concussed in the last match.

I'm in a win-win here :win: Germany wins, my pick from day one of the tournament wins. If Argentina wins, Messi get his world cup and Ronaldo tears will flow, and on a high from that Messi, a healthy Neymar and a muzzled Suarez will take La Liga by storm and dominate in the fall :blessed:

A homie can only hope :to:

without oezil these numbers would be much better. but i guess every team has a fraud.

It's time for Germany to drop Mesut Özil
Özil may have a goal at this World Cup, but he doesn't have an assist. He can't even claim that the team is better with him than without him.
...if Germany want to give themselves the best chance at the final and a fourth World Cup title, he shouldn't even be on the field.

All the while, Germany have limited André Schürrle to substitute appearances, or chances to save Germany after a dismal start. The Chelsea man has been fantastic, putting himself in front of goal, looking to push the defense back and even scoring the first goal against Algeria. Schürrle has been the polar opposite of the passive Özil, putting pressure on opposing defenses and creating space for others.

With Schürrle playing so well, and giving Germany a more direct option that they so desperately need, the defense of Özil is growing weaker. At this point, the best case for Özil is that he can find his once brilliant form, but to do so is to go into a World Cup semifinal clinging to nothing more than hope.

Özil parlayed his brilliant 2010 World Cup into a move to Real Madrid. His path to becoming one of the world's best was well underway and he had some great moments for the Merengues. He teamed with Cristiano Ronaldo to make for one of Europe's most feared attacks and while the Portuguese was racking up the goals, the German was feeding him. Özil totaled an amazing 61 assists in three season with the Meregues and helped them win the league and the Copa del Rey.

It'll be Mascherano versus Kroos, considering the latter is the more likely to play the most advanced role out of the GER midfielder.

Key battles, Kroos vs. Mascherano & Schweinstiger vs. Messi

True, but i dont know if Basitan has the pace for Messi quick change of direction. Either way its a super-final....it might come down to who's mid wins the battle and wing play...meaning Ozil's gonna have to not be a flab-meister.

Tite is apparently favourite to take over from Scolari if he leaves. He won the Copa Libertadores with Corinthians
