They simply want to use Lance as a 1 year stop gap so they can release him and have the space next season. They don't want to be bad enough where they miss the playoffs againSurprised since he doesn't fit their "good citizen/model player" prototype
This plan is going to blow up in they face, because all the stop gaps they sign likely won't help them make the playoffs and even if it does who coming here with those new pieces either gone or needing to be resigned? Then the major free agents will turn us down and we will be locked into having to sign more stop gaps or over pay for mediocre talent.
