I had a recent convo with a older guy who absolutely hated Bruno (he knew his music too) and agreed with the cultural appropriation but also blamed society and pop culture and us.

He said same reason Bruno is so successfull is why THE ROCK is the number 1 actor in Hollywood right now.

Everyone loves someone “Blackish” But not BLACK.

We give the Rock the pass so it’s no surprise Bruno gets away with what he does

So who’s really to blame?

Back in the 90s Mariah was loved by everyone Black and white but wouldn’t she be seen as a Vulture in today’s racial climate?

But the Rock and Mariah Carey are actually half black tho.

Ok so that even helps prove the point even further the Bruno is appropriating knowingly

But the guys point is that the effect is still the same just based off appearance or being racially ambiguous or passing as not Black for some while being considered black by others at the same time

A better way to state that point is people like black culture, they just don't like black people. They want black culture delivered to them from non-black people.

Man I'm so glad I grew up in an era where I could listen to Average White Band, Hall and Oates, KC and Sunshine Band and many more with no bullshyt attachment like culture appropriation. The shyt has been going on forever "RACE MUSIC" and we soldier on. Little Richard has been screaming about who stole his style since the 60's but he never said this dumb shyt culture appropriation. shyt is stupid, music has no owners.

U faggits allowed This along time ago by support that bullshyt
"we" didn't support Eminem. At least where I'm from. Most em fans were people who were saying " I don't like rap, but I like Eminem". Non-black people.

This is a good conversation because I see where both of you are coming from. If you're in close contact with other cultures, yeah, they will borrow your stuff and in theory, you will borrow theirs. That's just how human contact works.

On the other hand, appropriating from black people in America is a special case because of how egregiously non-black people have taken black forms of art that were forced outside of the mainstream by a racist society and then watered it down enough to make money off of it. Let's be real, Bruno Mars is just caffeine-free Diet James Brown, but I bet he makes more money than James Brown ever did off of this music.

From that perspective, this is exactly why I get where people like the woman in the OP are coming from. She has a name based on a Japanese word, but Japanese culture hasn't been raped and mined by non-Japanese people to the level that black American culture has by non-black people. It's just different.

Black people need to stop pocket watching europeans, who cares if Bruno makes more money off that watered down shyt he does, over James Brown? It's not black folks greenlighting that or dishing out more money for him than we did for James Brown. This is the problem with us,we would rather get the type of money they getting over there, than to keep our own dignity, self respect, and have ownership over our culture.

We can't be happy only making the kind of money you make, only catering and selling to black people. Then get upset when the white people you invite in to help sell you to their fellow cacs, try to make one of their own into a star,or don't give a damn about cultural appropriation and just want to make money. If black folks still had self worth in ourselves and our talents,Bruno Mars existence wouldn't even matter. There would be a black equivelant right now that would make Bruno Mars afraid to show his face in front of a black audience. But instead are young talents are busy trying to "get the bag" catering to cacs, putting out horrible music that takes minimal talent, that black people can't even respect the effort it took to make it,because their was none.

most of the people on twitter are "we know he's copying black people, we just don't care, because he makes good songs". I'm like well, it would be nice if he used his platform to showcase other aspiring black artists. Don't just say "well I give credit to black people"...help get some black people some careers.
Who helped him? Didn’t he work with B.O.B. on his very first single?

He writes and produces for others.

Let him do, do him.

Woke up on saw this, this AM.

Yall agree?
:jbhmm:

I agree. I NEVER LIKE Bruno Mars. He is corny without the appropriation and no one was checking for his music until he started imitating black music and trying to be the face of funk. He is basic, short, and his dancing isn't even good. He hasn't created anything new, he is just a copycat.
