Threads like this are why it's so hard to talk about Star Wars today.
I'm not a fan of Rey. We're two movies in and we still don't know who she is, or what motivates her to be a Jedi or a part of the Resistance. She has no backstory, no clear motivations, no struggles, no blood sweat and tears, and she never takes any real L's. Her worldview is never challenged. She's always right. She never needs any help from anyone, she never needs to train to get powerful, and she's always the most important and beloved character around no matter what. She's better than everyone at everything, and she's already 2-0 on Kylo Ren, so I'm not scared for her wondering if she's going to come out on top this time around. Rey is 10000% a Mary Sue.
However, that's not a knock on the IDEA of switching up with a female protagonist after 6 movies about all these dudes, nor is it a knock on all of the dope female protagonists from other movies/shows/games like Ellen Ripley, Samus Aran, Sarah Connor, the Bride (Kill Bill), Clarice Starling, Mulan, and any character played by Pam Grier.
And even though I don't watch GoT, I believe y'all on Arya. She sounds tight
People are too extreme these days. You have a lot of genuine he-man woman haters out there (like those clowns who made that men-only edit of TLJ) on one side, and on the other side, you have the people who will defend every female character ever to the death, even if they're LEGIT Mary Sues. You can't just have an opinion without one side of the extreme or the other putting you in a box.
Diversity is cool, and it's needed. However, diversity by itself isn't enough to make a movie good, and it doesn't put you above fair criticism either.
