Luther was a once in a blue moon role for a british black actor. Believe me, that shyt doesn't come often. Like the article said, had it not been for his mainstream success in America there is no way he would have been given that role at all. He's probably the most successful black british actor in history to date. Look how long it took for David Harewood to get a real opportunity - and that man was acting over here for YEARS. Richard Blackwood could have been the first Idris Elba, but he said at the time Hollywood didn't know what to do with a black man from England so he didn't get the success he deserved.

The black british golden age of TV was from the late 1970s to the late 90s. We don't have black shows like The Real McCoy (RIP Felix Dexter btw), Brothers and sisters or Desmonds anymore. Those days are long gone. Black families on TV are a rarity without the usual dysfunctional shyt - unless the actor has a white love interest - there really isn't anything that shows the real day to day living of regular black folk without the drugs, crime and other stuff. A lot of the so called black or urban movies are always are guilty of this too.

There was this female comedian around my way that I used to know called Gina Yashere who had to move stateside to find more opportunities, as well as Aml Ameen and quite a few others mentioned.

Things have improved now, but at one time the British film industry just didn't have a clue about how to portray black folk at all, hence you'd see all these embarassing roles with black folk in it that weren't even written in a realistic way.

A lot of it is just due to the fact that Hollywood is where all the work is as an actor black or white, but when you're black obviously it's gonna be much harder to make it in england than it is stateside. Unless you're interested in Nollywood instead, iono. :yeshrug:

I watch a lot of British television and don't really see any stereotyping as I would see it as an American, I guess. I don't live there but, from an outside perspective, they all seem pretty culturally homogeneous.

I also think that 'breaking America' is just a thing. A lot of people try to do it.
depends what country in Britain you're talking about.

England not so much because its not as racist as say Scotland or even wales.

I thought it would be the other way around honestly. Luther is mad refreshing. What's the problem?
luther the show where the black man lusted after only white women, was always in trouble and basically wept for four seasons over his white wife that left him for a white man..... :stopitslime:

It's one of those things on British TV you just expect now. :yeshrug: It's been that way for years. When we don't have our own media, we don't have much of a say. I knew the Luther character wouldn't have a black love interest and definitely not a black ride or die sidekick like Alice. The one black woman on the show was trying to bring him down. If you look at it from that angle, then yes you have a point. His wife was half indian btw.

I'm still a fan of the show (season 3 was still good but was the weakest imo).
