It's probably the best film about witches and the patriarchal construct around them that I've seen. While the dialogue was tough to digest and does take away from its scope, I understand why it was a necessary element. Definitely not a film for everybody, especially if you can't be bothered with subtext.

This. The movie is amazing to me, probably the scariest horror film I've seen in some time.

Yup. Movie works because it’s not just about the witches and satan and how that can get you but how your family and a patriarchal construct in that era could be the end of you. What always horrified me about the witch isn’t the witch shyt but how the family turns on the main character one by one all because she’s becoming a woman. That’s scary shyt. Family is supposed to be the refuge and to have your family be the thing that pushes you over the edge to do some demonic shyt is unsettling

never said the movie was great. i thought it was very stupid, yet it has 90% rating on RT.

i just couldn't believe that they would put a scene such as THAT in the first 15 minutes of the movie.

Terrible movie though. I checked the discussion on reddit, and there are some real psychos on there discussing the movie. But i never understood anything that happened. :mjlol:
because they knew the rest of it would be ass, so they tried to grab your attention and make you think it was gonna be worth it :francis:

think of the dude yellin all that rah rah shyt before a fight to appear intimidating, but cant buck a cockroach if he tried :francis::francis:

im conflicted, it is boring but extremely well made. some good ideas but they should never have marketed it like a true horror movie.

This goes back to the age old discussion: if it doesn’t scare you, is it a horror film? And what constitutes a horror film?

To me the witch is a horror film no question. Witches, satan, babies being killed and churned into blood, a horrific third act with a high body count, and taps into primal fears of alienation, despair, anger etc.

Yeah how people are saying it's not a horror film is beyond me. It eliminated a lot of what is wrong with horror films today: eliminated jump scares, delivered on its promise of true horror instead of just flirting with it, eliminated CGI and relied on costume design, etc.

The thing I love about the film is the ending. Most horror films would have stopped at the scene where she falls asleep, hunched over the desk. Instead the director went on some :usure: and proceeded to deliver on the promise by showing us the reality behind the paranoia. Pure brilliance.

Watched it on Netflix.

@MartyMcFly Are there any horror films since this one that's just as good?

I don't agree with you about jump scares homie. When done right, they're effective. They get a bad rep amongst horror geeks because we've seen everything but watching a movie in a crowd full of people and seeing them react is a thing of beauty. It's basic filmmaking and it's not easy to do well.

As far as movies just as good as this, plenty actually. Rosemary's Baby, The Babadook, It Follows, Exorcist 3, Hereditary, The Strangers...trying to think of some shyt I've seen recently lol

I said since this dropped...I've seen those except hereditary. Jump scares are for the short game, not the long game. Jump scares are cool sometimes, but directors nowadays make it their primary horror trope, when it should be secondary at best.

And that's the thing - that's how witches came about, it was simply women rebelling against that very construct, because they wanted a voice: to have independence, power and a life of their own, not under the thumb of men, and what better way men could drown out their voice than by depicting them as evil, unholy creatures, during a time where everyone was in a God-fearing state - reinforcing gender inequality and smearing the image of women who pushed back against patriarchal society. When really, in fact, they were just "wise women who made house calls, delivered babies, dealt with infertility, and cured impotence".

Because that's all witches were, females wanting to become women. Hell, this shyt is still relevant to this day.

You you know how many women were burned at the stake during the Salem witch trials?

This subtext isn't what makes the movie brilliant. That subtext has been done. What makes this movie brilliant is how it lends itself to folklore. While is does have subtext, the ending reminds you that this is a horror movie

But that's all part of the subtext.

Sure, we've had films that tackle patriarchal society, but they generally have very little to with the representation of witches. Because typically films about witches are dramatizations of fiction (casting malevolent spells, riding broomsticks etc), not about gender inequality and womanhood, in general. The entire film should remind you that you're watching a horror, not just the ending, because the horror is in the telling of female stigmatization in a male-dominated milieu.
