Its the cameras... he should stop relying on the gritty hand held asthetic... it doesnt work for every movie!!!! :mindblown: miami vice could have been awesome if he used traditional film cameras... the handheld shyt makes it look like a low budget documentary... ever since collateral... i swear....

Breh cameras wasn't the problem with Miami vice lol. He could've used IMAX cameras and it still would've been boring as fukk

Collateral is just okay while Miami Vice and Public Enemies are very underrated. Mann uses digital and doesn't try to make it look like film and embraces all the stuff that's unique to the technology. Which really turns people off, especially when the premise is a gangster film set in the 1930s.

I'll probably watch Blackhat at some point.

It's the look of the movies he's putting out. i could care less about the IMAX aspect... miami vice wasnt boring, if it was that's the writers fault... The movie took itself too serious. there was like no hint of comedy and no word . origin of the story of crockett and tubbs, there wasnt much chemistry between them at all...

He needs to use traditional cameras... the handheld shyt only works on a few movies... it doesnt work for them all...

Everything you just said: no chemistry too serious all equals a boring movie. The script was the problem. Doesn't matter what he shot it on or how, a camera can't make a script better.

when you heard his name as director for whatever movie back in the day do you still have that same feeling now? And that's my point his movies don't have the same hallmark event feel to them anymore. I am struggling to recall a classic he has done since minority report. Polar express made Hugo and his tin tin insignificant. War horse and Indiana Jones 4 suckiness speak for themselves but I digress

Well he's still my favorite director but I know he's hit and miss at times. Yeah Indy 4 is awful ( I skipped Warhorse) but Lincoln is dope. I know he's not bulletproof but I always look forward to the next project.

Would be nice to see Spielberg return to form. I think he has at least 1more classic left but i dont hold my breath anymore when i see his name as director.

I loved War Horse when it was still him raising the horse on his farm with the alcoholic dad and the duck and betting on whether they could plough that big rock and everything. Got pretty melodramatic once it got to the 'war' part and keeping it PG-13 ruined some would-be classic scenes.

If anything I think Collateral is underrated.

That said, it seems like all he can be counted on anymore is a great shootout or two, which is a shame.

From what I hear, the script for this movie was just awful. I also heard there was a lot of weird goofy CGI mixed in with his more raw filming style, and that the mesh of the two styles didn't work at all.

I don't know what the deal is. I still think if he gets the right script he can make a great movie. The guy captures city night life arguably better than anyone else in the game, and like I said, his action sequences are absolutely top shelf.

I probably should've seen Blackhat before dropping this post though

My 'Blackhat' review…..Like I have said, Mann is my favorite director, so I may be less then objective here….I loved 'Blackhat'. It is an absolutely beautifully filmed movie, the colors and the scenery are as much a character as anyone in the movie, Mann has few peers in terms of capturing the beauty and life of a landscape, from Los Angeles to China, and Indonesia. It is a Michael Mann movie through and through, and as one other critic said it plays a bit like a 'Mann Greatest Hits', so you have lines like 'I'm doing the time…time isn't doing me', and heartfelt, emotive conversations in dimly lit restaurants, brooding, existential criminals who stare at the ocean, pondering their fate and their role, breathless, hushed romances, characterized by the grasping of a hand, or a touch held just long enough, the weight of conscience, loyalty, and love, on a backdrop of brilliantly shot running gunfights, where automatic weapons threaten to cut away any humanity the characters strive for…..The movie echoes 'Miami Vice' most of all, with shades of 'Public Enemies' and 'Heat' at times….brutal violence against a stunning landscape of beauty, and technology.

Yes, there are unlikely elements of plot, yes there are lines in the script that aren't great..Yes, Hemsworth Hathaway's accent falters a few times, and comes across as less a hacker, but of a hybrid of all Mann's previous protagonists, no i did not really need the exposition shots wires and cords, tracing a computer signal through the labyrinth….These things don't matter. It's a movie of depth, and feeling, and real emotion. I could watch this again today, and be just as entertained as last night. I plan on seeing it again in the theater next week, honestly. I obviously see why a movie like 'American Sniper' is praised and publicized, and this goes widely unnoticed…..this is easily the stronger picture, and it is disconcerting how people would prefer 'American Sniper', in it's mundane execution and clumsy grasps at the kind of heart this movie has.

See 'Blackhat', even if you don't love it, it is interesting, compelling, thoughtful and one of a kind filmmaking on display.

On Mann's progression and style as a filmmaker since the 90's, Mann has found the kind of sleek, beautiful tone for his movies, that isn't as deep as 'Heat', but has a kind of detached, dark appeal that no one else can really come close to.….I loved 'Collateral, 'Miami Vice', I really like 'Public Enemies', so I know I am up against a lot of opposition here. But, I will say I don't know how you could LOVE 'Thief', & 'Heat' and strongly dislike his later work, as they are incredibly similar in all regards….Down to the shots, the dialogue, the themes…..De Niro in 'Heat' is spitting the same lines as Colin Farrell in 'Miami Vice', the unrequited loves….I don't get that aspect of Michael Mann critics.
