I had some bad ass Filipino toddler that was kicking me for the entire duration of that 10-hour flight while his grandparents ignored him. I couldn't even sleep.

First class was sitting pretty with reclining chairs, plenty of leg room, plenty of lean-back-space, etc.

When I fly to Japan, I'm definitely upgrading my boarding and seating position, fúck that. I'd rather go down in the cold ass ocean than sit in coach on that 12-hour flight to Narita

OP: if you’re flying from the west coast, get an early flight and stay up the night before so you can fall asleep on the flight. I used to do that and sleep 6-8 hrs on the plane

Similar to other countries, you can grab a rail pass and see most of the country, JAPAN RAIL PASS. I suggest the green pass which is around $500 for 7-days and $750 for 14-days. If you're a first time traveler there though, beware:

1.) You have to physically pick up the rail pass at a JR station.
2.) You still have to book a seat on each train, you cannot just hop on with your pass and be good to go.
3.) The rail pass does not cover subways and other forms of public transportation such as buses. So you'll need yen (or a different pass) to pay for those.

You can also grab an International Driver's Permit from AAA. It's good for a year and allows you to rent cars from Enterprise or similar.

Since Narita Airport is in Chiba, there is a shop maybe 15-20 minutes from Kashiwa where you can even rent supercars (GT-R, Twin Turbo Supras, etc.) if you're feeling adventurous...this joint was like $200/Day.
