Personally,,,I've been through literally 100+ message boards
Only announced my retirement 5 times
1) illegal stuff was happening.. that was more of a veiled warning that the spot was about to blow (the owner was in fact arrested a few months later)
2) just logging off would have caused some people some problems.. so I did a two sentence goodbye in a random thought thread to not create drama
3-4-5) I was a staff member,, so I was also resigning my spot ---- didn't want to hurt the forum by just logging out

All 5 times I stayed gone.. never posted again.. never made a new account..

3 times I did monitor my account for 12-48 hours..

For one site, I continued to lurk for 2 weeks to see who they replaced me with
for another site, I continued to lurk 1-2 a month for another 5 years because I still wanted to read on that topic (just had no time to mod, post topics, answer questions, etc)
For another site, I visit once a year to see if it still exists
