My city definitely saved the AF1 from extinction. shyt has been well documented. As far as Js go they took off big here after that 88 dunk contest. nikkas would be quick to rob you of some Js or a Starter coat. My mother refused to let me get a pair even when I had some dough saved up of my own. I didn’t get my first pair till 95 when the 11s droppedBro... I'm not the stereotypical NYer...
I was bless with the opportunity to see different places when I was young and got to see alot of shyt I would have never seen growing up in NY.
But I also got to see how "TRENDS", Slang, fashion and everything was different outside of NY...
Again, back in the 90s maybe even Early 2000s you could go anywhere and see some people with Jordans on.
But NYers made it like a super part of the culture, like how it is now everywhere...
Now you got a guy in here talking about NYers didn't make AF1s a big thing, just like we made everything a staple in hip hop culture.
They are called "Uptown" for a reason.
I'm not saying this shyt to disrespect any other place.
NY dominated the culture back in the day.... So most things everybody does started because we were in charge of the culture.
And it took a long time for other places to catch on, because there was no internet yet.
Now you don't see big differences in the culture, everything is blended. East coast, west coast, Midwest, south... Everything is like almost one style now and everybody is doing and saying the same shyt at the same time...
.it wasn't like that back in the day.
But I wouldn't expect people from outside of NY to know, because how would you know
I will say tho that we did take a lot of cues from NY in the 80s and 90s. A lot of that had to do with so many college students coming down here and also nikkas selling crack
