Is it common for players who haven’t won anything in a team that has won, to have their shyt retired? Unless it’s like some loyal 20 year veteran or you are the all-time top scorer etc.We retired Shaq's number.
Edit. Googled and saw that Tim Hardaway had his retired so naturally Jimmy should have his, and obviously Mourning did win but as a bench captain but still the greatest in the franchise at the time.
But at the end of the day, friendships with the higher ups matter. Hopefully he can mend it in the future.

Yeah the reason was Bron didn't know Spo like that and Bron wanted play for Riles cause he loves history and wanted to play for the man that coached the Showtime Lakers
