I gotta know what shows people are watching if the first handful of episodes in "BB" are slow to them. Very first shot of the series seems like a stand off with police. Cancer diagnosis, DEA raid, cooking meth, showdown with Emilio and Krazy 8, and Walt catches his first body all in the very first episode. 2nd episode they're melting bodies in acid. 3rd episode Walt catches his second body and Hank finds the gas mask which leads him to Walt's school. The next two episodes, which are probably the slowest of season 1, feature a car exploding.
Like I said earlier I have no idea how people made it through "The Wire" if this show is too slow for them.
Fred.
There isn't much suspense or anything leading up to many of the things you listed. They just kind of happen, well because they have to. Nothing is really much of a surprise. The very first scene makes you curious as to how he got into that situation, however knowing the situation will ultimately happen kind of takes away from the build up to it. Cancer diagnosis, DEA raid, cooking of meth, Emilio and Krazy 8 were all meh moments. When he abruptly fainted and then the ambulance ride, you kind of knew a terminally ill diagnosis was coming. The DEA raid was non climatic, and whats worse is they let the real perp escape, Emilio and Krazy 8, if you were paying attention you knew exactly how that was going to play out. 2nd episode it takes an entire episode before we get to the melting of bodies and then we have Krazy 8 held hostage for longer than necessarily, we all knew dude had to die. Hank finding the gas mask led to absolutely nothing besides a very minor character getting arrested. I wouldn't call a car exploding exciting which leads me to....
I think the misconception here is, when people call this boring and hard to get through, is most of you automatically assume we are looking for violence, explosions are something similar to a action movie. That isn't the case, at least not with me, I just didn't find anything throughout the majority of the first season suspenseful, dramatic, or anything to have me on the edge of my seat. The feeling of immediately want to start the next episode after one ended just didn't exist forme besides wanting to push through the beginning episodes to get to where the show starts taking off. I know you are one of the biggest fans of this series and our critiques may be unfathomable but it is what it is and only our opinion of the show as we see it.
And in regards to The Wire, it took off for me after the 3rd episode of the first season, but if I was a member of this site, when I started the second season you likely would have seen a thread that stated "How can The Wire be GOAT contention with such a horrible 2nd season". The Wire is top 3 show for me at this point, so despite my transgressions with Breaking Bad at this moment, it still could possibly end up in contention to be at the top of my list.
