Surprised it doesn’t happen more often

It is going to :francis:

It is a bit like climate change in the sense that it is not a problem for the people living in the moment.

Because we live for approximately 80 years, these buildings seem old but the reality is they are essentially permanent fixtures. 40 years isn't enough. The question should be whether it will be standing in 100, 150, 200 years.

smh at these rescue workers standing around chilling hours later.
can't they move the rubble by hand until equipment arrives?
got like 6 dudes with rescue dogs chopping in up on a putting green and a lone random woman stunting on top of the wreckage talking about "top of the world!'

there are people in there!

:damn:

Nah and that woman is an idiot.

They need to secure the area first. When a building collapses, you have to consider shyt like has leaks and the rest of the structure collapsing.

Doubt the rescue people are just chopping it up. They're more than likely trying to coordinate shyt.

Look at 9/11. A lot of the first responders ended up getting lung cancer.

what if the rest of the building collapses while the rescue is taking place?
imagine being trapped under the rubble, tired, confused and possibly naked.
you hear movement, then a voice. people are trying to find you!
then, a large rumble...
it seems to go on forever.
when it's all over the darkness surrounding you somehow blackened further.
you look down and notice that you are indeed naked.
This was my thought as well. Watching the coverage has my anxiety through the roof!

Securing area is part of it but not the only reason. They first need to locate where people might be, hence the dogs. Then after they need to plan quickly how to get to them you can't just start removing rubble because things might collapse further closing whatever pocket of space is formed underneath. Sometimes they dig tunnels to get to the person. Can't just have an excavator on top of the rubble.

This seems like a foundation issue to me, buildings 40 years ago were built "stronger" than today because the science was janky back then. Now it's all about cost savings and construction efficiency.

The area has to be deemed clear of hazards before first responders can go in there and start clearing shyt out the way. You don't just run in there you gonna end up creating more problems that way.
