So whatever political parties in control of Brazi now and the current President signed a law to censor the internet this year, 2018. So if he does go on a deforestation plan, lucky us (the world), the Brazilian government could do so with out as much vocal pushback, because they have authority to censor.

First France, Now Brazil Unveils Plan to Empower the Government to Censor the Internet in the Name of Stopping “Fake News”

So the last couple months when I said you should be against all censorship because it will eventually censor ideas and people you agree with......this is exactly the type of scenario, I was referring too

its much more common throughout history for leftists or human rights activists to be assasinated than these right wing authoritarians. it definitely wont happen in brazil where most of the military police and paramilitaries love this guy

True and it damn near may be impossible to ever happen in America again with how far they will go to make sure another JFK incident doesn't happen again. Depending on whether you believe JFK was shot by an outsider or not :mjpls:

I’m ambivalent towards Bolsonaro. If I’m being honest there some things about him that I do like, but there are also some things that terrify me. I’m just hoping for the best.

I will say everybody in my dad’s family and a most of the men that I respect and look to as mentors in my personal life are proud supporters. These aren’t people that are white supremacists, they’re just people that are sick of the direction the left has taken the country. A lot of the people that I’ve talked to just want somebody to clean up the crime and corruption, and they’re willing to look passed Bolsonaro’s flaws if he can do that.
I said this earlier in this thread and this is what I believe too. This guy won votes from pretty much every demographic and his victory was emphatic so it’s not as simple as “let’s vote him because we hate black people”.

Brazil is extremely violent, corrupt and unequal. The system they have right now simply isn’t working and when someone comes in promising to restore order, wipe away the “scum” responsible for all their ills etc it’s very tempting. We’ve seen it happen all over the world, especially in developing countries.
Personally I don’t think he’ll be able to deliver his promises as the crime, corruption etc will still remain and then what? Interesting times ahead.

Anyway, looks like my big booty hunting trip to Brazil has been put on hold for now :mjpls:

What people are not mentioning is that the right wing militias join the police in operations in the favelas to fight the gangs there. These right wing militias are ex and current military/police,firefighters and prison guards. They are fighting the gangs over control of the drug routes. I expect the Brazil murder rate to double the 64,000 last year. In 2019 we are going see a lot of atrocities committed by the police, military and militias. The favelas are going to be bloody battlefields like Mosul,Aleppo,Fallujah. And best believe these gangs are heavily armed and aren’t going away lightly. shyt is about to get messy.

Yep, people dikkriding China to attack authoritarian is always funny to me.

A lot of democratic countries are stable, some others are not. It's not about democracy.
It’s about institutions. If a nation doesn’t have the right institutions democracy fails. Why you thing democracy has failed in the Middle East because going way back to the Ottoman Empire there’s has been no strong institutions to promote democracy. Dictators also make those institutions weak which even if they fall the country descends into chaos(Libya). In the US the institutions are strong but unfettered capitalism and greed is going to be the downfall of America.

Strongmen aren't known for taking criticism and failure well. Usually leads to crackdowns and indiscriminate murders and jailing of dissent.

I think they'll have a hard time with that longterm in 2018. Trump or no Trump.

That said a lot of people believe Maduro is a victim of Western lies and conspiracies and continues his reign of terror.
