yea i see higher belts get caught all the time but its only cause, like my boy told me, higher belts take it easy and experiment with the lower ranks. ive passed brown belts guards at times and be like :gladbron: only to be like :sadbron: 3 seconds later in a kimura. i just saw a video this morning where a white belt doing his blue belt test caught a black belt in a kneebar.

just talking about this makes me wanna roll right now :feedme:

i took the day off tomorrow just so i can go to the am class and go after the big dude since i missed class monday night.

Yea you gotta be comfortable with takin an L every now and then in search of that creativity. I've found alot of sneaky shyt by letting people work and almost catch me

So much freedom being a white belt. I don't even wanna show my face when I take layoffs because.of the conditioning I lose because of downtime

I'm still in it to win it. I'm sure every gym does stripes and whatnot differently--at mine, they issue a blue and white stripe belt in between white and blue, which I earned last week. Of course it's still a white belt, but felt good to accomplish something, since I know it's going to be a long road toward that blue belt.

I have good athleticism, so that saves me sometimes, but I'm trying to be Mayweather surgical with it when I learn techniques. Doing a lot of tapping, so I'm just trying to soak it all in and get a lesson from it.

there's only one belt in between blue and white? how long did it take you to get it, and how long will it be until you earn blue?

@beanz could you elaborate on the bs belt system your old school had

@Mowgli does your school focus more on self defense or sport?

btw that's some real shyt you and @Mr. Somebody have said about the freedom of a white belt. when i get disillusioned at how long it takes, i remember that and start to enjoy it more :salute:

Well my old coach was kind of an egomaniac and came up with his own system. He even customized the belts. His system was first white, then white with one blue stripe, then white with 2 blue stripes, then blue with 1 white stripe, then blue with 2 white stripes, and if u didn't also train in muay thai and no gi, he wouldn't promote u. Also he started charging dudes to give them their purple so I was like Nah I'm out. I got to blue with 1 white stripe and didn't move from there cause in his words all I wanted to do was "pajama fight". Well I'm a gi head, I'm not a fan of no gi. So I moved on. When I came here none of my old rank meant anything so I had to start from fresh white belt which I'm fine with. Like mowgli said there's a lot less pressure and I can refresh what I learned with fresh whites.

thanks breh

my coach's system is: white - white with 1 stripe (yellow belt - white belt with internal yellow stripe) - white with 2 stripes (white belt with internal orange stripe) - white with 3 stripes (white belt with internal green stripe) - then blue belt and on

i dont like that no gi shyt either. it's real disrespectful to the original masters to shyt on no-gi fighting like that in my opinion.

our grandmaster is relson gracie, so i guess technically the lineage is from helio. but the school has relson's name on it :manny: i think that's where my coach gets the belt system from

I didn't mind the colors so much, I minded the fact he wouldn't promote people unless they took the other classes which, conveniently for him, costed more money. N then his attitude about the gi was disrespectful. He's an egomaniac and greedy tho so I'm glad I moved on. He learned from Rob khan who got his black belt from Royce so it wasn't a bad lineage.

My new schools lineage is Carlos Gracie to renzo Gracie to John Danaher to doug pelinkovic who is the owner.

yeah, colors is whatever to me, but i like how difficult it is to get to blue belt. there's an affiliate school in BX run by Mike Casey, you ever heard of it?

relson schools are a little different from what i understand, BIG emphasis on self defense and lack of machismo culture. from seminars it seems like orange belts are often matched up well overall with a lotta blue belts from other schools. i dunno how shyt those other school are tho tbf

there's a lotta weirdos in the bjj world, we got lloyd irvin's team here in the dc area. google results alone are :merchant:

Yea i heard of that other school.

Lloyd Irving took a huge hit with that thing :mjlol: serves him right with his mma millionaires club marketing shyt. Charging other school owners for business advise that pretty much amounted to jacking up prices. My old coach was in the mma millionaires club and them jumped ship when he realized Lloyd was a crook and then started his own marketing bs. I rather learn from people who want to share the art more then they want to become rich off students.

The self defense aspect is great, but I'm not in bjj for self defense. I started to lose weight and then I wanted to learn. I'm more of a hobbyist and technique nerd. I didn't start bjj because I was being bullied. I took muay thai and I sparred too but I always just felt like I rather spend my time and energy on rolling with the gi. If i could just roll for 8 hours a day I would.

Yeah, unless there are people in my gym with other belts I haven't seen yet. I believe we just use the blue with a white stripe until you get your blue belt. Just left the gym, and a blue and white belt I met had tips on his belt, so maybe they just do the black tape thing until you take your blue belt test.

No clue how long it'll take until my blue, but I've asked other blue & white belts how long they've been training, and a lot of them say stuff like 9 months or maybe more, which leads me to believe they have us rocking blue and white on that blue belt path until you're ready to test. I've been at it for a couple of months, so I'm assuming I have a ways to go until I'm ready for the blue belt. I just legit started rolling with dudes, as they ease beginners in at my gym, making sure they get some basic technique down before letting them get their head smashed.
