I caught the Brazil - Venezuela game this morning and I was not disappointed. As expected, it proved to be a far better game than anything we've seen or will see in the corresponding European championship. European teams are :trash: Katie Hopkins football, as Expressions would say.

The build-up play was consistently of an excellent and thrilling standard. The finishing though :mjlol: utterly awful.

What I found a little surprising is that somehow Tite has turned Brazil into Stoke City circa 2008, they look at their most threatening from set pieces. All those corners Neymar took carved up the Venezuelan defence; they had no answer for it

spanish commentary alone make Copa better :wow:

The falloff most of the Conmebol teams have had in the last 5 years is :mjcry:

We've tied the last two games against Argentina and both felt like filler friendly matchups than legit WCQ or Copa America matchups. Yeah there's a fukk ton of fouls but the level of play is so bellow of what it was 5 years ago. And boy, our search for anyone worth a damn from attacking midfield and strikers is endless :sadcam:

We'll take the point but we are back to being a run of the mill team.

Idk but I read online that, that academy's are snatching up talent and not letting the kids nurture on the streets. But that's just something I heard through the internets grape vine.

But wtf do I know:manny:

I don't have a great answer for you as I'm not sure what happened either. Most of the players in each squad come from leagues that play at a higher level than most of south american national squads do nowadays. And there are good enough managers to make these teams play better.

But it's been a good number of years that a lot of games are just a muddled mess were either it's very difficult to string along more than 3 passes because your squad sucks or because the other team's pressure just forces mistakes. shyt is played at a much slower pace than what the current style is played at too. Meaningful first touches are hard to come by and actually facing the field forward (instead of constantly going backwards no matter what) is something that's very rare these days.

Sure, a team like Brazil is heads above everyone else but watching squads like Argentina, Colombia and Uruguay be so damn mediocre and lacking ambition is :mindblown: to me. At least we (Chile) have the excuse of not having a good enough squad and people getting too old and no one worth a damn showing up to replace them. But man, some of this teams should be beasting and they just go "meh, a half assed performance will do".

That is one possibility. The absolute destruction of club level fútbol in South America has fukked up not only the youth academy's but also the local competitions. Copa Libertadores is still fun as fukk to watch because of the drama and intensity, but the level of play has dropped off drastically in the last 10 years.

Still, a lot of national teams have more than enough talent (and decent enough coaching staffs) to play better than what they've been doing lately.
